One thing I would like the umpires to do, and I believe it is lacking, is overcome their hesitancy in calling a free when the other umpire is in control of the game. All too often an infringement is made, whether it be a punch, throwing someone to the ground etc, off the ball, and it is seen by the non-controlling umpire and nothing is done by him. Isn't that one of the reasons we have more than one umpire.
I wonder how often the umps have discussions about these sort of things at the practices.
I am aware of one instance recently where an umpire (not in control of the game at the particular point in time), saw something off the play and blew his whistle and awarded a free against the infringer, only to be told after the game that he should not have called it cos he wasn't in control of the play at the time. FFS. When challenged by the umpire as to the logic behind that he changed his mind and said yes you did have the power to do that.
Like I said above, these things need to be discussed etc by the umps at practices as there appears to be some confusion amongst themselves even.
Perhaps these comments can be seen as constructive criticism with a recommendation attached rather than just bagging the umpires.
Maybe they do discuss it - I don't know. But if they do they need to discuss it a bit more and the implementation of it and other things.
