I think some of it has to do with a protest vote against Workcover changes. In very safe seats, voters are more likely to make a protest vote to send a message without wanting an overall change.

In the marginal seats, Libs couldn't get over the line. That suggests people voted carefully on local candidates and local issues, with an eye to the bigger (state) picture.

Sad to see her go, she has worked hard for her electorate.
However, it seems the foibles of the Labor connection have hit her hard.
I don't think she lost because of being a bad member but more because it was a protest vote.

It was notable to me that Rann didn't acknowledge Maywald's contribution as a Cabinet Minister? Given he had previously described her as having arguably the toughest portfolio, I thought he might have said something about her. However, it's always been contentious within the party that non-ALP persons were in Cabinet, he obviously decided not to go there in fromt of the party faithful.

Who will be the water minister? Who do our local people turn to now.
Looking at the spread of seats, Labor's retained a mostly city situation.
Caica, given he's the Ag Minister (which crosses into water a little), could be the man.
However, I believe that Karlene's loss is going to have a massive impact on politics in this region and that will play havoc for a while to come locally.

The future IS an interesting one. Will water be a portfolio of lesser interest now? Do they give it to a junior Minister, or a solid performer? Caica is an option but given Weatherald is the Environment Minister and did so much talking about the water issue in the election campaign, I reckon it's his. I'd say Caica could be a chance to get Education, given he has held the TAFE portfolio.

Well it's looking like

Labor 24
Liberal 18
Others 4

I expected a swing to the Libs, but not where they needed it most, and that was the case. No point having a 10% swing to the Libs in Ramsay when the margin is 28%.

IMO, the two big surprises of the night were the loss of Adelaide and the swing to Labor in Light.

Hopefully this will provide the kick up the backside Labor needs to be a bit more accountable to the people. However, the result will allow the state to progress with the continued improvements in public transport (such as the tram extension to Semaphore, which the Liberals planned to scrap), the new RAH, and a great city Stadium in the new Adelaide Oval.

FWIW in the Legislative Council

Labor 4.53 seats
Liberal 4.7 seats
Greens 0.79 seats
Family First 0.53 seats

Dignity for Disabled 0.14 seats
Democrats, Save the RAH 0.11 seats
DLP, Gamers4 Croydon 0.1 seats
Winderlich 0.08 seats
AbortSA 0.03 seats

What a fall for the Democrats - who would have thought 11 years ago they would lose pretty much their entire support (only 6742 votes).

Now for some of the shockers (those with 0.01 seats or less)
Howard Frayne with just 70 votes
Joe Carbone with 311 votes
No Desal No Dams with 393 votes
Peter Panagaris with 474 votes
Kelly Henderson with 565 votes
Joseph Williams with 630 votes
Frank Williams with 587 votes
Garry Mighall with 912 votes
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

A wins a win ;) As Rann said, Dunstan and Bannon won their 3rd terms by 1 seat.

Was it just me or did Redmond look and sound a bit feral in her speech?? Really unimpressive compared to a passionate Rann speech, he was actually believable in his passion for SA's future and progress. Lookin forward to the next 4 years.

To the Liberals, get your stability and become a stronger opposition, 4 terms is too many for any government. And as a Labor man, id be happy for a term under another government.

They're voice is going to be sitting on an opposition backbench i bet ya. Would've payed off if they got hold of government, but in essence their protest vote has backfired.

It has been a tight and at times nasty election campaign that has been waged a lot longer than many of the others across the state.

Whilst there have been strong swings against Labor in both states, I'm not sure that the Libs are popping champagne corks to be honest.

The Libs look like only gaining 3 seats from Labor and have only managed to collect 18 seats in a 47 seat house. Now while that's a good comback from the last election they are in reality still a reasonable way short of governng in their own right.

It does help set them up well for next time though.

In Tasmania (as I have posted elsewhere), the Libs can only hope for at most 10 seats out of 25 when Labor are on the nose after 12 years in power ... how that is a great victory is beyond me.

I saw Nick Minchin espouse the view this morning that the loss of the Adelaide seat meant that the electorate overwhelmingly rejected Labor's RAH hospital plan. And I thought the Libs were denouncing spin!

For the record Mr Minchin, the Save the RAH party have received 4947 votes out of the 558,235 counted so far in the Legislative Council, hardly an endorsement for the Libs RAH plan (yes we did notice that key players in that party are Liberal Party members).

Also interesting to note is that the Fair Land Tax Party have only received 3418 votes in the Legislative Council after such a prominent and expensive advertising campaign in The Advertiser.

There is certainly anti-Labor sentiment at the State level, with the NSW government waiting for a slaughter when they finally go to the polls, but it seems that's the way the electorates in Australia operate ... put one mob in at the Federal level and balance that out with the other mob at State level.

... and LOL to the 2 people who voted for Labor in this topic's poll after the election result was known!

A valid point that many people are arguing Duncs - mostly in the pro-Maywald camp.
Will be interesting to see how Tim works on proving people wrong.

An interesting afterthought now it seems Labor will hang on to government.
With the demise of Karlene Maywald who will have the poison chalice of water resources minister thrust into their trembling hands?.......

Not sure it will be such a poisoned chalice to he honest.

While the situation with the Murray is still grim, there's sh*tloads of water heading for the Murray because of all the floods up north, the desal plant will be coming online, and those in the Riverland who dumped Maywald will realise soon enough that dumping a minister was a dumb thing to do when their local member is now a useless backbencher in opposition.
