10 goal quarters but lost the match.

Postby Mr66 » Sat Jul 26, 2008 7:11 pm

How many teams have kicked 10 or more goals in a 1/4 but still lost the game?
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

You are Effing unbelievable.
But I think you already know that, don't you.
BTW, that Woodville/South game @ FP in 1984, is that the highest scoring 1/4 ever?

Some of the stats in this thread are awesome reading, spelly. Many many thanks to you and your band of followers for loyal dedication to the cause. How much of your life (in percentage terms, minutes, fractionals and kilobytes) do you put into your data store and statistical generation!

I vividly remember Round 2, 2001 at Elizabeth. We played Norwood under lights at Norwood Oval in Round 1, and lost - which bought us back to earth a bit. We unfurled the flag, and it all looked good - then North exploded with a 10 goal third quarter, coming from about 22 down to 32 up at lemons. From memory we kicked something like 9.0 to 0.0 in the last quarter to turn it back to a 22 point win! This game got so close to being in there twice!

And, there was not a breeze to boot. Unbelievable match, which kick started our season. Clarkson was looking down the barrel of inheriting a Premiership Cup and getting off to a 0-2 start!

A most appreciative ST...

The 9th one in that list (South v Nwd, 1974) is something. It must pretty much by definition be the biggest deficit a team has faced at quarter time and won. Would love to know more about how it fitted into the context of both teams' seasons. (Just a few short seasons before my time.)

It is the biggest deficit overcome at quarter time, 57 points:

Round 9 1972
Norwood 1.1 9.6 16.8 18.15 (123)
South 10.4 12.7 13.9 18.11 (119)
Adelaide, 10656

I'll bet Adelaide Hawk has the goalkickers for that match; I can't offer that with this match.

Coming into this match, Norwood were 2nd and South 10th. Souths' only win to that point was the previous week against West Adelaide. The week before that, North kicked a then SANFL record of 34.22 (226) against South.

Norwood went to the top of the ladder the following week, replacing Centrals. However that was the only round that Norwood headed the ladder because of a loss to Glenelg in Round 11 and subsequently could not string enough wins together to dethrone Central again, or North. They ended up in 4th place, having been eliminated by Central.

South also won the following week, but because West Torrens won as well, were still in last place on percentage. However neither South nor Torrens finished last - that went to West Adelaide.
