John Devaney of Full Points Footy has published two books so far - an encyclopedia of Australian Football Clubs and a WA Football Companion. Further info is available here:

The good news now is that he has just completed his latest book and sent it off to the printers this week - he is expecting it to be available at the end of the month. It is the Full Point's Footy SA Companion! The Index of entries in the book is here:

Sounds like a good xmas present to me, (and also LL, AH and Spelly!) but I thought others might also be interest. (Please note that I have no personal stake in this promo - I'm simply sharing the information).

John was interviewed on 5AA this week and the amazing thing is that he has lived in the UK since 1963 when I think he was 6 years old. The interview expands quite a bit on his passion for footy in a country that knew nothing of Aussie Rules and how he subscribed to the Budget, Football Times etc and collected everything he could about the game - yet lived so far away. The interview is available via podcast from the station's podcast page at

The podcast in question is headed FIVEaa Sports Show with KG and Cornesy 04.11.08. The entire podcast lasts about 33 minutes, with his interview comprising the last quarter of an hour or so.

I was thinking of getting the first book he's done on Australia-wide, but I don't know what it contains. Does it have full write ups on team history and origins and then their respective records? I'm wondering whether its a combination of the SA media guide we get now and some old books I've got which talk about Woodville of the 1890's and so on? Anyone who can give me a run down of what they contain would be great...

Yes, it's difficult to understand what the selectors were thinking. What other club would leave a 600 goal HF flanker out of its Team of the Century?

The answer of course is how many clubs actually HAD a 600 goal HF flanker to omit?

I saw Doug Olds play, late in his career admittedly, and I saw Roger Woodcock kick most of his goals.
I'd put Woodcock in for Olds - just not sure who goes to the wing.
I didn't see Albert Sawley but he'd need to be more reliable than Brian Sawley who played in the 1950s was to hold a spot.
[Brian was brilliant on his day - they just weren't frequent enough.]

No way would you leave Doug Olds out of the team. His record for Norwood and South Australia is superb. Besides, as you say, Woodcock is a HF flanker, Olds is a wingman. No comparison.
