Kerleys in the SANFL...

Postby The Apostle » Sun Oct 25, 2009 10:36 pm

Talking about Neil (West, South and Glenelg) and Stephen Kerley (Norwood and North)...

I am related to Neil (clue: the K in my username...).

How close (or far) did he come to winning the Magarey?
How many times reported?
How many weeks/games was he suspended for?
In what years was he ineligible for the Magarey? etc etc.

Also,
Did Stephen play in any Grand Finals?
Was he an All-Australian?
A state representative?

Thanks!

This is D.N Kerleys' year by year voting for the Magarey. The closest he came to winning was in 1965 when he finished one vote behind Gary Window.

1956 Neil Kerley West 2 0 0 2
1957 Neil Kerley West 4 1 0 1
1958 Neil Kerley West 3 1 0 0
1959 Neil Kerley West 5 0 1 3
1960 Neil Kerley West 4 1 0 1
1961 Neil Kerley West 15 2 3 3
1963 Neil Kerley West 15 3 3 0
1964 Neil Kerley South 5 1 0 2
1965 Neil Kerley South 15 2 4 1
1966 Neil Kerley South 13 3 2 0
1967 Neil Kerley Glenelg 7 2 0 1
1968 Neil Kerley Glenelg 1 0 0 1
1969 Neil Kerley Glenelg 7 1 2 0

I can't answer the reports questions unfortunately.

Stephen Kerley played in the 1975 and 1978 flags for Norwood.
I did once have an All-Australian list, but not anymore. I don't think he was one.
Adelaide Hawk would be the best bet for the last question.

And therefore to his brother Ted, who used to breed and show Poodles in Adelaide.
I knew Ted slightly in my distance past as a breeder of Dalmatians,

Stephen Kerley played a state game in 77 but never an All Australian. 130 games with us after 40-odd with Melbourne. Not sure how many he played with North, but don't think it was many and the main memory I have of his time at North is Neil Balme falling into him with two knees to the ribs at Footy Park in 81.
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

I remember Stephen Kerley played a year or 2 for Victor Harbor in the Great Southern League after his SANFL career was finished.

Thanks for all the replies fellas.

I'm also related to S.A. tennis player Joel Kerley who was a promising junior player a few years back and was a member of the 2002 junior Davis Cup team for Australia. IIRC, I last heard he was a junior tennis coach for South Australia.

My Great Grandfather Frosty Kerley was a dual premiership player for Bute on the Yorke Peninsula in 1915 and 1923. According to the Bute Football Clubs history book, he played football wearing a felt hat and used it to mark his mark when kicking for goals.

I don't think i'm related to Stephen as I believe he's originally from Victoria. I've never met Neil and I was surprised to find out that a lot of old-timers in the family aren't exactly his biggest fans...

My Uncle started a job one day and he was introduced to this bloke who was friendly at first till he found out my Uncles last name. Turns out he was a close relative to someone who was touched up by Neil!

Another bit of info for you. The founding father of the Kerley family in S.A. was a man by the name of Henry. When he married my Great Great Great Grandmother in 1849, his employer at the time was pastoralist George Charles Hawker, who later became a prominent politician and played for the original Adelaide Football Club in 1860.

The name Rod Kerley rings a bell.
Any relation to Stephen?
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.
