Jumps Racing

Postby hottie » Fri May 06, 2011 8:47 pm

Been thinking about jumps racing the last few weeks,as much as i enjoy racing in general i am starting to think it wont be around in Australia much longer, especially what has happened at Oakbank and worse at Warrnambool.Heard a debate on ABC before Oakbank between John Glatz and a member of anti jumps racing and i must admit i was impressed the anti jumps member presented his case.He remained very calm when John Glatz was carrying on like a child throwing a tantrum. If i do believe the anti jumps member all he wanted was to ban jumps racing and said flat racing was fine.

The worst argument the "pro" jumps has is that all horses finish up in the knackery if they don't race. That's just outright rubbish and it demeans their argument. It also gives the "anti" jumps persons a leg up (pun).

I don't bet on the jumps races themselves because I find it difficult to pick a winner but that's the only reason.

spot on

lets ban the equestrian events at the olympics

anyone see the photo in the paper ? while it was a needless accident as the patrons apparently were watching from a point where they really shouldn't have been (said that today on radiotab) the horse jumped all by himself with no urgings from a rider, when landing in the crowd he got spooked & took off, i also heard the anti jumps protester on 5AA today he made this point that at oakbank on the easter monday wagering was down $100,000.00 for the day compared to last year, i'd presume this is true but what he failed to mention was this year it fell on anzac day which included having the collingwood v essendon match on tv, central v norwood match at the adelaide oval etc, obviously there were a few more things going on this year than the previous year...god help the protesters if ever they saw a horse in the bull ring..............i still think the 'safety jumps' are the problem as the horse learns to skim through rather than jump & this causes the problems as there was never ever this many casulties in the past...........i have heard eric musgrove say that we (aust) are one of only 3 of the 27 countries that have jumping races that start from the barrier stalls as the rest start from strands & horses are trained to ping out running where as the strand starts they would be at a slower clip

as for being laughable about sending horses to the doggers, well you may laugh but it is true & while not every horse would be sent, there would be a pretty big % that would be, if i was paying up for a horse that lacked ability to run, i would firstly try to give it to anyone to use for a hack, pony club etc but if i couldn't find a home for it i'd cut my losses & send it to the knackery as i wouldn't want to feed a horse for the next 15-20 years
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

About time someone finally raised this one. For some reason, equestrian gets completely overlooked in this argument.

I fully appreciate the animal welfare side of the argument, absolutely no question at all. The fact is - more horses WILL die if jumps racing is banned and the anti-jumps lobby generally overlook this point entirely when making their points. I've been having a healthy debate with a mate whose views I deeply respect and admire on this same thing, and that point often seems to be missed by the lobby. If anyone in the anti-jumps lobby can prove to me that less horses will lose their lives overall if jumps racing is banned, then I will listen.

Bayman is right - people yesterday were in a place they shouldn't have been. It's like going to Clipsal, sitting next to an open ended corner without protection and complaining if a car comes near you.
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...

Dutchy, you're spot on......I listen to SEN during the weekdays and the guys in the afternoon slot interviewed Steven Pateman (sp?) (the winning jock of the main race) about the jumps events and future of jumps racing.

He said that the day of last years' carnival, there were huge protests and one horse died, meaning that the carnivals' future was in doubt. Jumps racing was suspended and the entire future of the industry was put in doubt. The next day, he went to a pony club event and three horses were destroyed. Not a protestor to be seen.

what % of racehorses of flat events retire to a paddok or end up as pal??

that i believe is another issue

also these anti jumps people if they did any research into greyhound racing will start up a campaign to ban that.

Im surprised that people are saying the horses will end up dead if they dont race. AS most know Ive been involved in a few horses and even the duds have found homes as pets (we even got $ for one of them)

Why - is there an animal-welfare problem with Equestrian events?

Not sure what you mean MT79. A few people have suggested that people should protest against Equestrian events - do they think there are animal welfare concerns with Equestrian?

with the arguement that jumping is unsafe there is obviously the link to both sports, i still think the 'safe hurdles' are mainly to blame because horses lose respect when they realise they can skim through the jump rather than actually jump it & this is what they are supposed to do & this is why mistakes are more prevelant than in yesteryear

ps, i wonder whether the doo gooders have ever seen what happens in a bull ring.....that i don't agree with

You still haven't answered the question - are there any animal welfare issues with Equestrian or not?

Dutchy was the one who suggested Equestrian was worthy of protests. I'm still struggling to find out why? People who protest about jumps racing do so because of the deaths and injuries to horses - are deaths and injuries to horses the same frequency in Equestrian? Can anyone provide an answer or statistics about this?
