Dumb Courage??

Postby Mop Up » Sun Apr 11, 2010 8:10 pm

Alright I'm bored, lets get some discussion
Do people agree there is such a thing as dumb courage...

Seems AFL players these days are so professional and will be ridiculed so much if they shirk a contest that they are throwing themselves into ridiculous collisions....
Obviously there's times when you've got to go, running back with the ball etc but sometimes its just stupid and often the player is knocked out and gone for the game, which is massive these days being a man down on the bench....

Thoughts?!

And while I'm at it, with the head being protected so much by umpires it seems player are just diving at opponents legs and knees knowing they will get a free kick but in fact putting themselves at more risk, meaning the rule isnt doing skadoosh. Sometimes a player is standing there not moving and a dude unleashes a flying headbutt at his leg and he gives away a free.... whats he meant to do?

this is one of the best posts ive seen for a while and couldnt agree more moppy .... the afl MUST do something about this by encouraging umpires to also use common sense when judging these decisions , while they have to look after the person going after the ball they must also give the opposition the chance to win the ball back . as you no doubt know we are now seeing this creap in to country footy as well as blokes see oncoming traffic and do the same thing and duck there heads just to get the free kick , on the topicof people getting hurt was this weekend one of the worst weeks for injuries for a while or is it i only noticed this because half my dream team went down with injurys ?? :? :? :? :?

The problem is this the AFL is afraid of head and neck injuries, because if an AFL player breaks his neck (I know one or two have in the past.) on the field by a collision the AFL is worried about being sued or parents not letting their kids play the game. the flip side to this is players have figured this out and are using this to their advantage, there is a difference between going for the ball and diving into another players legs to get a free kick.
Unfortunately one of the diving players will get seriously injured and that will be it. Players will stop doing this but the umpires need to notice the difference but are to over umpiring the game to try are prevent this. I feel it is time to go back to the old rules enforce them and quit making new ones that are screwing up the game. And one more thing Bring back the Bump

Jordan Lewis showed dumb courage on the weekend IMHO. I don't think there was any other outcome possible other than being knocked out.

For those who say the modern day players are soft they need to watch this mans game and it shows they are as tough as ever but it is shown in a different manner to what it was 20 years ago.

Did Lewis know it was coming though .. Taking the eye off the ball for a split second could be the difference between getting to the ball first or second sometimes such is the speed of their game.

Surely he knew someone was coming...................if he didn't then he needs to work on his awareness skills.

You are right though about the split second decision they need to make.

Yeah I guess he shouldnt have gone for the ball, pulled out and let the bulldog player just grab it.

Seriously all he could have done is jumped high at the ball so at least he would have clashed at the same height.

I agree with the points of awareness. Now the bump is out, particularly the bump to the side of the contest, players dont need peripheral awareness cos they know they aint gonna cop one.

That is far from what i meant. What i am saying is that there would have been plenty knowing that was the outcome who wouldn't have gone for the ball. He didn't have a choice but to go for the ball or cop the wrath of his coach and team mates.
