Only if they trade players already on AFL lists. Drafting non-AFL listed players mid-season shouldn't be allowed .. although the AFL couldn't give a stuff about clubs in other competitions trying to do the best they can.

Various top level sports have mid season trading its hardly a new phenomena.

Where it may have some affect is that it has the potential to change outcomes for some of the sides if they get the right players, if a side is getting smashed each week in the ruck because of injury, so they trade someone for ruckman they can well turn that around whereas currently they have to accept it and hope that someone steps up to the role.

Clearly there are various advantages and probably disadvantages to be had - thoughts?

In regards to the opening statement as if the afl wants to follow the epl in anything. What a load of carp it is. Boredom city

According to the Footy Show tonight, Mid Season Trading is on the table and likely to happen as early as the 2012 season.....

Look at anything the EPL are doing and rest assured the AFL will follow in their footsteps, Two Divisons and Player Loaning will be the next cabs of the rank - watch this space! 8)

Player loaning would suck. I see the afl going similar to NFL with mid season trading, maybe a trade deadline?.

Sorry mate the AFL is nothing like the EPL. I think the whole AFL structure is based on the Americanised sports like the NFL with trades, salary caps, midseason trading, uneven draws.

Every club gets injuries, and every club should live with them. Luck is a huge element in winning a flag, and always will be regardless of what the AFL try to employ to counteract it. And if you're recruiters haven't done a good enough job in the previous few Novembers to cover it, too bad so sad.

It's change for change's sake, doesn't need to happen.

I think Clubs will pull this old one out when it suits.
The article says Scott Watters knew they had to replace Gardner at the start of the Season. Player recruiting and managment is part of the game. I have always looked at Geelongs ruck stocks in disbelief with good player after good player in reserves. They have lost a few and the still have good ruckmen. It shows forward planning and good recruitment.

I do however want to see some sort of midseason trade for situations like Chad Cornes last year where Port was not playing him when he was clearly in form and un-injured. There are other reasons why a club wont play a player other than form and fitness. If this situation arisies then its a win win.

Problem with mid season trading is i think there will barely be a trade unless its like a draft bringing in players from out the AFL.

Using Chad Cornes as an example, why would they trade him to another club. They would gain absolutly no benefit and would be giving a competitior a league up. Unless they were to get draft picks for the next season but the only teams interested in that type player would be a side looking for instant success, top 4 type side who wouldnt have a great draft pick to offer.

Found it interesting that in the NRL its just the done thing.
Luke Kelly played for the Melbourne Storm on Friday night but due to lack of opportunity this season the Storm released him to Paramatta. The Eels have promised him match time and he will play next weekend for them.

15 Years behind EPL? You've got to be kidding me. So if we get rid of the salary cap, bring in transfer windows, sell off the clubs to foriegn ownership, jack up the membership and ticket prices we could have a league where only three teams could possibly win the premiership? Oh yes please let's have that. NOT.

If a side is getting smashed each week in the ruck because of injury maybe they should have thought of putting more than one specialist ruckman on the list like every other side did.

Interesting to not hear any news or complaints about SANFL clubs doing their own mid season drafting, with one example being Nic Schwarz from Flinders plucked to play reserves football. Any compensation from SANFL or South? nope don't think so. No different to the AFL taking players from the feeders club. Part of life. Cant have it both ways IMO
