Coaches Report - League
I would like to write some positives however there are none to report from this game. Regardless of the opposition we want competitive efforts from all twenty-one players in every contest and for the night we only had several players who could state that they gave they’re all. Obviously we at the moment are relying on too few.
The responsibility I have is to select players who are willing to compete regardless of scoreboard pressure or pressure from the opposition. At the moment the results are completely unacceptable. As we continue to develop our young list, we need to put in better performances now. Until we do this any written word is insignificant. If we have any pride – we will respond this week.

At the risk of starting another Holding The Ball cufuffle, I reckon Flip might have been lucky not to get pinged with his off the ground goal.

Granted, but what about the Glg goal (@ the northern end) which resulted from the umpire blowing his whistle, the Norwood player stopped to look back to why the ump blew the whistle, the ump calls play on and the Glg player with the ball runs into an open goal and kicks the goal. I can understand that sometimes the ump blows the whistle and then sees and calls play on, advantage, but plenty of times they don't need to blow the whistle before calling play on, advantage.

The better umpires have played the game in the past. No one can effectively umpire a game they have never played.
I can not recall one baseball umpire that is not a former player...... not sure about other sports.

Cripes. Even in the darkest of times surely the coaches job is too see some positives and give the group something they can work with. Just giving nothing at all makes me think the bloke has nothing left to give.

And how have you come to the conclusion that the current SANFL umpires have never played the game at any level :?: :?:

A while a go I was watching a bit of the cricket. There was an attempted runout and the umpire called for the 3rd (video) umpire to make a ruling. Ch9 replayed the attempted runout. The batman was clearly not out. The video screen showed the 3rd umpire's verdict. Not out. There was a roar of abuse towards the umpires. Why? Sri Lanka was batting and it would have been an Australian wicket. Why did the crowd abuse the umpires when it was CLEARLY THE CORRECT DECISION?

Most of spectators abuse towards umpires is because the decision was against the team the spectator supports not because it was the incorrect decision (even if the spectator thought it was).

Plenty of times when I was a boundary umpire in the SFL and SANFL (U17s) I was abused even though the decision I made was correct but because it was against the team the spectators supported.

If a person has no experience in umpiring, they would have no understanding of umpiring decisions. Spectators attitude towards an umpires decision is most often determined by their support for or against the team the umpiring decision was made not whether it was correct or not.

I would have thought his responsibility was to get the best out of his players, not just select them and leave it up to them which is what this message is implying?

He sounds like a lost man who has little left to give and nowhere to go. Sad, I thought 'our' Mass would have been ok in that role down at the Bay.

A problem with Basset heading to the AFL is that the AFL clubs have filled their empty coaches spots by the time he's holding up the Premiership Cup again ;) .

Doubt that any AFL club has room for a figjam like Bassett (apart from Collingwood, but that's a different matter)
