My story is really my Mother and Grandmother supported South. They grew up with her family in the Clovelly Park area coming down from Broken Hill. As a kid I grew up in a "die hard" Glenelg area. Our house was 4 houses down from the Kernahan's. Glenelg were successful but I just hated the Bays. Just could not relate to them for some reason. Think it was the players at the time and going to school with all Glenelg kids. (It killed me to wear a Glenelg jumper playing under 17's!!!)
I can remember being the only kid a school footy training with a South Adelaide jumper on and getting heaps from my teammates. (as any South supporter would know what I am talking about!!)
I remember catching the train with my South scarf from Oaklands station and going into Adelaide Oval and watching them get defeated 28 times straight, holding a tin to get money when they were about to fold. (S.O.S - Save Our South) and drinking lemonade and raspberry at the St. Mary's clubrooms with my Pop and Uncle and meeting with the players after the game.
What is sad is I have not seen any success with South and neither did my Mother who passed away a week before the final of 2006 when we knocked out Port Adelaide. I dont prey much but I remember I looked up at the sky when South were down in that final and saying "Come on Mum get them over the line". They did and at the end of that game I was in tears. Sadly to say we did not go on from there (typical South...they give you hope but it vanishes very quick!!)
I still hope one day they will get their sh*t together and win a Grand Final. I maybe an old man then, but it surely will be one of the greatest days of my life...
