My grand-father was raise in Bennett St, Thebarton, so was a West Torrens supporter, & married my grand-mother, who was also raised in Thebarton (the old tuck shop across the road from Thebarton Oval).
However, they built their first home in Prospect (near Kane Reserve, home of Ovingham FC).
My Dad, Uncles & Aunty all supported North from a young age (they did however all choose a different VFL team- Fitzroy, Essendon, Geelong, Hawthorn & Collingwood).
So by the time I was born, my Dad had supported North for 20 years- I first resided in Jeffcott St, North Adelaide.
Long story short- NAFC since birth.

Grew up in the Hills in Sturt's zone and a mate barracked for Sturt when I was about 5. My Dad went for North and my brother for Port.

Grew up in the Southern Vales from 1970 onwards, Bagshaw, Burgan, just to name a few were our idols at school. There were a pile of us young lads who became Sturt supporters as a result of the local hero's and the success that the club was having around that time. 1976 was the year I became totally hooked, was the year I started playing footy myself. My mother supported Sturt, my uncle too, my great uncle used to take me to Sturt games after my matches. I convinced my folks to take my sister and myself to the 1976 Grand Final...I still remember the line up and thinking we'd never get in...but thankfully we did. :D These days my nephew has become a Sturt man, playing junior footy for the Club and will line up next Sunday in the Under 19's Grand Final clash.

This story is nearly as long as one of Big Phil's posts!
Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.

My story is really my Mother and Grandmother supported South. They grew up with her family in the Clovelly Park area coming down from Broken Hill. As a kid I grew up in a "die hard" Glenelg area. Our house was 4 houses down from the Kernahan's. Glenelg were successful but I just hated the Bays. Just could not relate to them for some reason. Think it was the players at the time and going to school with all Glenelg kids. (It killed me to wear a Glenelg jumper playing under 17's!!!)
I can remember being the only kid a school footy training with a South Adelaide jumper on and getting heaps from my teammates. (as any South supporter would know what I am talking about!!)
I remember catching the train with my South scarf from Oaklands station and going into Adelaide Oval and watching them get defeated 28 times straight, holding a tin to get money when they were about to fold. (S.O.S - Save Our South) and drinking lemonade and raspberry at the St. Mary's clubrooms with my Pop and Uncle and meeting with the players after the game.
What is sad is I have not seen any success with South and neither did my Mother who passed away a week before the final of 2006 when we knocked out Port Adelaide. I dont prey much but I remember I looked up at the sky when South were down in that final and saying "Come on Mum get them over the line". They did and at the end of that game I was in tears. Sadly to say we did not go on from there (typical South...they give you hope but it vanishes very quick!!)
I still hope one day they will get their sh*t together and win a Grand Final. I maybe an old man then, but it surely will be one of the greatest days of my life... :)

Great story Southee. Pity the players don't hear these. They're quite inspiring and are great examples of the passion that people have for their SANFL clubs.

Grew up in Northfield and resisted the red and white influences

Mum worked for Woodville Council and got Dad weekend work on the main gate at Oval Avenue and took me to the footy

First match when I was three.

Only kid bar my sister to follow the mighty peckers/warriors at Northfield Primary/High which led to numeroud trips to the headmasters office due to defending Woodville's not so glorious win/loss record with a few of the other kids.

I remember these words "provocation is no excuse for fighting" , yeah right :)

I've had a few mates who have switched their allegiance over the years. Has anyone here ever done this? It's something I could simply never contemplate...

my great-grandfather moved to glenelg when my late grandfather was 6 years old. my great grandfather took my grandfather to the footy, my grandfather took my father to the footy, my father has taken me to to footy...

at his funeral this year, a lot was mentioned about his beloved Glenelg!

A lady at my parents church used to go through the charity bin and give my mum first dibs on anything she thought we could use.One day a vile itchy long sleeve Red footy jumper with a White V found its way to our home. Couple of weeks later my old man who used to volunteer on the canteen at Memorial Oval for the Pt Pirie Athletics Club said North Adelaide were playing Torrens in a Pre-season/Trial game (I assume here I guess is was not for Premiership points..'74,75,'76 maybe????????) and we had to go and help clean up .Bugger me dead I almost died when I was dragged down there and North were Red with a White V and because it was cold I had that bloody itchy jumper actually on.........hooked for life....Also now 4 younger brothers are members due to my influence and my step-son and a nephew are regulars all because of that bloody jumper and the fact it happened to fit me.

Why couldn't it have been a Port Maggies or Centrals jumper :( :(

I support Westies because Dean Woosnam used to do Mum n Dads landscaping in his first year at westies( i was about 7 or 8) and they become good friends along with most of the side and thats why i started supporting them. I just didn't follow him to sturt  i was entrenched as a westies man by then.

Mum was a Norwood supporter, Uncle is a North Supporter.

Uncle took me to my first game v Port Adelaide when I was about 4 and told me to cheer when the red and white team got the ball.

Then I saw Tim Evans...end of story. My uncle still wanders to this day where he went wrong

Both my parents were Norwood supporters, I was as a toddler but as I developed my own personality I decided I'd want to follow a mediocre club. South didn't have enough drunks so North it was.
Geelong seemed the logical choice in the VFL/AFL too.

My excuse is that I was a child...
As a pre-schooler I said I barracked for Sturt - because I liked blue.
In early primary school I said I barracked for Glenelg because I liked palindromes.
In later primary school I went with Torrens due to peer influence - peers like Russell Virgo.
Then I started going to the football with my older sister and saw the [red and blue] light.
