Graham ... to be honest I don't know ... from the start of my football knowledge (1977) it was already on TV.

However I did read a history piece at some point talking about the count being on radio from 1938 until TV took it on.

Earliest TV footage I know of is 1970:

I have documented that 5AD covered the broadcast in 1937....Channel 9 telecast it in 1964.

As a member of the public I went to the 1969 medal count (Fred Phillis) in the Adelaide Town Hall. I believe this was telecast by Channel 9 with KG as the host.
The famous story of the 1966 Medal winner Ron Kneebone being at the Royal Show on the evening of the medal .... and being found by 5AD (they may have broadcast it that year?)

Well well.
The Maccas Cup GF and the Reserves GF are being live streamed!
That's a good thing for sure, but it does beg more questions about why the Magarey Medal couldn't be live streamed!
