All discussions to do with the SANFL

I would expect all SANFL clubs to notify the SANFL they would forfeit any game against an AFL reserves side.
No kids at SANFL games ?????? What are those things running around chasing and kicking balls at the breaks ?

Good to see you blokes can't actually read written English...

Never was said kids don't go to the footy. My original post about it was they couldn't give a flying **** about it.

Being there and having a kick at half time is different to turning into a life long member who will be passionate about the sanfl. I feel that the AFL competition will win with these kids.

True but the SANFL for many kids will be their first form of viewing competitive football live. Having worked in vacation care for many years players such as the Gowans are more well known by the kids than any AFL player. Also not many kids knew the Crows clubs song but all you had to say was UUUDogs and they knew what you were talking about.

Having players as school teachers has a massive effect, the amount of times i heard Ritchie Cochrane is my fav players, his a teacher at my school or his my friends teacher etc etc.

The SANFL needs to be the affordable, family, community league. Make the kids feel part of the club, if they think they know players or are part of the team they will keep coming back.

In England alot of the local clubs have had this idea where at each ground not only is there a family area, there is a teen area, the way it works at Chelmsford FC, is kids between the ages of 10-13 can be dropped of at the football by the parents and have a designated area to watch the game, this also includeds child care workers who look after the children until the end of match. The kids are giving half time food and drink and the players make sure to interact with the kids area after the game before leaving the pitch.

I spoke to a lot of supporters at a west v glenelg trial last week and there were numerous (not all) supporters who said they'd throw in their membership and wouldnt bother with a comp where two teams focus i not about winning. (See what it has done to the VFA/VFL).

I doubt I'd go in 2014 if they allow this to happen and have these concerns

1. Sponsiorship will gravitate to the popular power and crows reserves sides
2. Volunteers will see a career path through to the crows / power afl side
3. Kids will gravitate to the reserves sides and no longer support their sanfl clb especialy if they are not doing well. I teach kids and winning teams attract support
4. Top up players - NO way do I want any junior from my club leave to play against us.

The more I think about it, the more likely I'd give the game away an do something else on the weekend. Maybe we need a petition to present to Chris Davies now and all supporters who are members to make their thoughts well and truly clear to their respective CEO's and presidents befor its too late.

Our competition has too much history and pride to become a B-Grade apologist competition to AFL clubs who we wont even own.

So when the SANFL needs it's diehards the most you'll walk away?? Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

This little black duck will follow the SANFL as passionately as I've always done.

And with respect to other posts on this thread,

And having been away at a grade five school camp as a parent helper i was surprised at the number of kids who approached me about the Glenelg shirt I wore one day and did I play for them (no mate I'm not that bloody good). You'd be surprised about how many kids follow and recognise the SANFL and will talk about it with out being prompted.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Out of interest, for those that are old enough, how many of you said that you'd walk from the SANFL when the Crows were born?

Not me (I actually tried to support them, didn't feel right after supporting Essendon for so long before them) I never ever even thought about turning away from North or the SANFL for a second

I juggled both for quite a while.

In 1991, used to go on Crows Cheer Squad bus to Melbourne Friday night for game Saturday return Saturday Night then SANFL on Sunday. I was not alone in this.

That was before wife, kids and mortgage.

When in QLD for 5 years (1993-98) was part of the Crows Brisbane Supporters Group.

When I moved back I even rented at West Lakes 300m from AAMI Stadium

BUT

I found with a new family that the SANFL was just as enjoyable, a lot more accessible and much better value for money.

With the kids rather than having a seat and it being like a 3hr airplane flight at Woodville they could roam around the hill and have their own space.

I am still a Crows "follower" but will only follow them when SANFL commitments allow.

Sounds a bit like myself . I had a season ticket first year of the crows money worries and the fact 45'000 fans turned a 10 minute drive home into an hour .
Were the main reasons I decided to go to the sanfl and not the crows

I think I would be close to being shutting the shop as I dont have any interest in the AFL.

It just makes a mockery of the SANFL competition as a whole.

I think I would go support the Adelaide Thuderbirds or something like that.......

On kids following the SANFL, I think kids are losing interest in the game as I know at least 3 or 4 schools in my local area that can not get a team together even when they are combined!!!

Sad days as I remember fighting to get a spot in a side as a kid.
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!

And THAT is the biggest issue the SANFL needs to address ..... not persecuting clubs over paperwork related to salary cap admin .... NOT breaches PAPERWORK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
West .... give them back the fine ! XXXXing disgrace a club has to sell off assets and almost close down due to some stupid law no one can comply with. Your charter is to assist clubs not send them broke SANFL.
If not for the AFL there would be no salary cap so who is running SA footy the SANFL or the AFL ?

The last thing you'd want is no salary cap resulting in a large gap between the haves and the have nots

I "followed" (very nominally) a VFL team until the end of the 1986 season.

Max Basheer's comments about the decision not to join an expanded VFL competition, made after the 1986 Grand Final, were not wasted on me.

I gave up my (admittedly shallow) support of the VFL team at that point. Crows were never an option.

Interesting that you chose to discount kids that play the game! Ones that play the game are more likely to be engaged long term with the game than those that dont.

Presume you dont mean the southern suburbs as footy is very healthy, school footy will always struggle but club footy is booming with some clubs turning away players and having to cap registrations.

My girls already come with me to SAAFL matches wearing their yellow and black jumpers and the occaisional SANFL game SAAFL commitments allowing. They know their tigers and love them and always want to come with me to the football club. My wife says I'm brain washing them but at least I know who is washing their brain and its not the Cows or the Paps.
They will grow up loving the Tigers at all levels of the game be it SAAFL, SANFL, WAFL or AFL. Their cousin was a league player for Claremont and think he is cool when they see a picture of him in his Tiger jumper.

Teach them at a young age and they will stay loyal.
