I'd dismiss him for the year as a minimum. It's harsh, but I'd be appalled at a Sturt player getting involved in a fight with fans, what does that say about the player and his respect for the reputation of the club?
Defending yourself when attacked is one thing, but you can't condone a player acting like a dumb ass fan and provoking or instigating this type of situation. Again, he's not the only one at fault, but unfortunately he holds a position whereby the repercussions for him are a lot more serious than they may turn out to be for those members of the public who were involved. I'm sure all clubs will be sitting down their players and reinforcing the "walk away" policy...
and the Sturt "supporters" ?
I don't believe someone holding their groin saying "suck on my nuts", look at the scoreboard and calling someone or a group an offensive name, can validate an assault. Moronic, stupid yes. Worse, due to the fact a player was involved. He should have been removed from the ground if true, in my opinion.
Yes, perhaps it wouldn't have happened if Treeby hadn't done what is alleged, or if Eagles hadn't kicked the sealer, or if either party were asked to move on, or if there was more pro-active security - if, if, if. Or perhaps some other reason would have been used as an excuse/reason for the ensuing violence?
I'm sure Treeby will be held to account for his actions, but seems like an over-reaction to some idiotic alleged verbal abuse (and I don't think to many on here are trying to defend the culprits anyway). Hopefully security will be more pro-active in the future and "supporters", will realise it's a game at the end of the day.
