SANFL to be reduced to 8 sides by 2014?

Sounds as though current league theory has flaws in it. Maybe they should change SA footy into a relegation/promotion type model, then clubs wouldn't so much cease to exist in that they would have a few bad years in a lower division.

Relegation/promotion can't work in the Sanfl if we want to keep the same standard

You're right standard difference would be quite apparent between teams promoted up and relegated down, but i think after a few years money would determine standard and it would equalise. Strong clubs would stay up, weak clubs would go down, works in theory.

All grounds would need some serious coin spent on them to bring them up to a required standard .. Those in the top flight (current SANFL clubs) that couldn't afford a drop in their revenue would be knackered when they dropped down a grade and lost most of their players.

Just not an option I don't think.

One of the rules of the promotion / relegation system in the EPL is that you have to show that you have the funds and a stadium of the required standard to be promoted.

Its an interesting idea though, what clubs in the UK do that dont have an appropriate home ground is usually ground share with another club. No reason that Thebarton or Wayville could not be used either.

Some on here have made it very clear they would. Like they say, you can forgive but not forget.

If we go by that rationale, then we can hold all Port supporters in contempt for the words of a few members of that group who wish that the entire SANFL would die.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Without getting all CSBowes on us, who is then?

Can Merv Keane's sacking really be to blame? :D

Those days are looooooong gone regards beating port imo, they haven't been near to being a force for a long time, beating them is nothing like it used to be.
As for crowds, I was at alberton a few weeks ago and the attendance was sad. Last sun at prospect (stand alone game) less than 3k.
Port's crowd no's (whilst the best in the sanfl for a long time) are now over rated and almost a myth.
Having 400-500 more to a game is small fry and almost irrelevant. Projected crowd figures for norwood v port last time at the parade were well below expectations.
I am not doubting for one minute port have the biggest following in the sanfl and I am not trying to whack port either - but I won't subscribe to "no port - no sanfl".

I dont see a workable solution to the reserves issue and I dont know that either AFL club or the SANFL do either, without completely compromising the SANFL.

If the afl clubs sole desire is to develope it's players by playing in one team under a unified game plan.

Why did they turn down playing in sanfl reserves ???

It's the perfect solution afl clubs get what they want without compromising sanfl comp.

Maybe it isn't really what they desire ???

I'll doubt it. Port Haven't had the biggest following in the sanfl for over 5 seasons now.

Whether a team dropping out eventuates or not this has highlighted an interesting point for Port supporters and the PAFC. That being, when their license is handed back to the AFL, and it looks certain to be very soon, it is very possible that they may no longer have a team in the SANFL. A mini AFL reserves comp between WC, Freo, Ad & Port is growing legs and with Ports finances as they are I can't see the AFL funding a team in the SANFL also. Will this create more division for Port supporters.

I agree, this for mine is the best option as far as the SANFL's integrity goes, but obviously not ideal for the two AFL clubs to have their players playing reserves grade football every week.

Did we just agree on something?

That's what I did when Port Magpies were shaking the can and bought a membership, along with 3,000 others remember the year they had 7500 members sign up

Imagine that (John Lennon would be proud) a Norwood supporter buying a Magpies membership, I repeat a Magpie membership not the Power.

Go to it laddy,
