West Adelaide...3.3...5.4....11.9....16.10.106
Port Adelaide.....1.1...4.4.....4.7......9.9.63

Reserves:
West: 14.11.95
Port: 11.14.80

Crowd: 3036

A question: what happened round about the 14 minute mark of the last term? Watching the ABC it looked like J Clayton under much duress handballed the pill over West's goal line. I got distracted by a screaming kid or a moaning missus or some other minor detail of family life, and when I next looked at the screen the goal umpire was signalling a goal and Clayton was taking himself off. What did I miss? Who kicked the goal?

I thought Port we're ordinary today. A real lack of intensity and don't they fall apart at half forward.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I believe the ball hit the behind post and a free for deliberate out of bounds was paid

Tremendous effort today. It must be almost time to give Jimmy Ezard the magarey. Hard to pick our other best players. Great team effort. Burgoyne was clearly ports best. Harder and Stanley tried hard most of the day.

I believe that's actually the rule; if you try to rush a point but put it out of bounds it is deemed as deliberate.

If it is that's crazy and completely against the spirit of the rule, if he was deliberatley trying to handpass it for a point then he's quite obviously not deliberately trying to handpass it out of bounds.
All the obvious deliberates I see every week and this gets paid?
Crazy.

Ive seen heaps of cases where a player has tried to deliberately handpass a point and missed and sent it out of bounds with no free paid, if its a different rule when it actually hits the point post then I am amazed.

Wedgie, that has always been the rule. You can handball for a point, but you cannot handball deliberately out of bounds. The behind post is out of bounds, therefore the correct decision was made.

If you've seen it many times in the past, I'm not surprised. Umpires get so many things wrong I'm not sure even they know the rules sometimes.

Whether it hits the point post or not is irrelevant as I understand it. I'm not 100% on this but I'm pretty sure I've seen this paid a few times in AFL games.
They just don't like having grey areas where an umpire has to actually make a decision using judgment.

There are already too many grey areas as it is; I have always known this to be deliberate if it hits the behind post. But given the scarse nature of deliberate free kicks in the SANFL it does seem wrong.

That decision happed right in front of me and he had three unmarked Magpie players near him and he chose to try and handball it through the points but hit the point post. Clear free kick.

I thought Westies played very patchy today and still we won by 46 points. Their third quarter was brilliant and James Ezard was clearly the best player on the ground....AFL here he comes next year. Steve Morris is an absolute STAR and his attack on the body and ball is incredible to watch.Really liked our foward line too, if we can keep all three for the next few years, we will definately play finals. All are young and talented.

After the game the sign of respect the players gave to the Past Players was fantastic and still gives me chills...hopefully one day these boys will be past PREMISHIP players. Great crowd (over 3000) and a great day for the club.

Despite the losses of Hassan and Cupido, Westies seem to be showing that the club has some depth at the moment and they seem to be getting better and better despite the losses of players, Westies seem to be really be beginning to gel as a side, will be interesting to see how they round out the rest of the season!

Were you watching the same game as I was today? Burgoyne collects cheap handballs around the back and kicks short chip passes. He makes too many errors, as evident by his turnovers today, of which gave the Bloods 2 goals.

I agree however with you call on Ezard, maybe Port shouldnt have delisted him when he was still only a boy. No more deserving winner if it were to unfold.

Matt Lobbe told really showed the Magpies what they missed out on ...played out of his skin and his second efforts were fantastic. Constantly ran into space to offer a target to his team mates. Has been a huge reason that Westies are a better team.
