Rd 16 North v West Review

Postby Wedgie » Sat Jul 18, 2009 7:24 pm

NA 12 9 81
WA 7 9 51

North Goals: Wright 4, White 3, Alleway, Ackland 2 each, Schwarze 1

I'd probably get abused again for giving my opinion of the game so I'll leave it at that.

The only positive of the day is we can hope that Sojourner stops bumping old topics insisting West are a chance of taking North's spot in the five.

I'll put my pics up tomorrow as the computer I use to process my photos has gone backwards in standard this year.

First ten minutes of the game won it for North, in that time Westies were not in the hunt. Cupido still continues to disappoint me, just sits out and gets the easy possessions, time the coaching staff at West take a stand and drop him to the Magoos, a guy that does have talent but just seems to bludge time and time again, and i only see Westies 2 or 3 times a year If he put in, he could really make a huge difference

Match review purely from a West point of view:

Prospect Oval was in surprisingly good nick, given recent conditions, except for the cricket pitch area. Having the centre circle slightly on the grandstand side seemed to put the lopsided oval back into sync, somehow. Westies sent out a search party for their Reserves. Missing in action the week before, they were still safely out of sight in the first half of today's game, until the half-time siren. By that time, North had given a clinic in everything except putting a side away on the scoreboard. An all-in scuffle right on that half-time siren had West coming out for the third quarter a different side.

It was that sort of game where you say "We're not totally out of this game", even though you should be. That soon became "We're a silly chance here", then "we're right in this", then "we should win from here". We did, despite only having 18 players for the last half and a bit.

The siren to start the league game sounded with the score 3.0 to North, zero to the Bloods. Well, that's what it seemed like, so perhaps that was the score after 4 minutes. North did as they pleased, looking polished, too tall, too quick, too smart and too skilled, with James Allan getting the footy frequently. Quarter time it was 5.4 to 1.0, 109 possessions to less than 50. West responded in the second quarter, which turned into a stalemate, mainly due to West not knowing how to kick goals from 20 metres out, or 5 metres if there was an open goal. Status quo at half-time, with James Allan getting it frequently.

West shifted Daniel Webb into ruck in the third quarter and he jumped all over the North rucks to give West first use of the ball. The Bloods lifted and dominated the quarter, with Ryan Bennett, the lad from Renmark who had been selected a couple of weeks previously out of the blue, kicking 4 goals for the quarter and handing another one to Sal Hassan. James Allan got the ball frequently.

Only 2 goals in it at 3/4 time. It was the sort of game where you said "we're not out of this".

We were, as West ran out of gas and North finished off better, kicking a couple of junk time goals when the game was over to extend the margin to 5 goals. That was probably a fair indication for the day. West looked off the boil most of the day after the previous week's effort. North looked very good, but only scored 12 goals from a s...load of possession, even though James Allan got the footy a lot in the last quarter.

Best players: There were 2 outstanding players. James Allan (see above) was one, but not B.O.G perhaps, although that was arguable. I thought Phil Davis in defence was superb, with 30 possessions and 8 marks, several of them contested and he got my best on ground vote. As for other North players, there were plenty of good performances: As a non-North person, I'm only guessing, but Thiele, Armstrong and Wright were consistently good. A special mention to Stribling, who tagged the in-form James Ezard out of the game and contributed positively as well.

For the Bloods, Ryan Bennett, with 5 goals 2 and a goal assist, out of a total of 7 goals, was probably best, with Ben Fisher, Wade Champion and a terrific game from Steven Morris leading the rest. Ryan Ferguson and Damon White had a good battle, with Ferguson comfortably on top under a weight of possession, until White got 2 goals (including an F.A.D) in the last few minutes.

Random observations: I was unfortunate enough to sit in the stand near the Rooster's supporter who leads the "Roosters, clap, clap, clap" chant after a goal. He went through his whole repertoire from "Roosters, clap, clap, clap", to "Roosters, clap, clap, clap". I suppose it keeps him happy.

Secondly, I admired the North crowd's appreciation of the umpiring. Favoured by a 30 - 21 free kick count and 4 of their 12 goals coming from frees, to West's 1, they convinced themselves that the umpires were murdering them  This, despite the fact that my hero, Tony Dey, was umpiring.

In any event, 51 frees in a game is way too many and spoiled the game, which often didn't reach great heights. As for Tony Dey, he didn't disappoint me, continuing his eagle eye against any West Adelaide rules infractions. His eagle eye morphed into a whistle blow on many occasions. My hero again, Tony :D

I went home, strangely not that upset. The last few weeks had been tough and the Centrals win might have affected the mindset early, by which time the game was nearly over. In recent seasons, that start would have translated into a belting, but to their credit, they've developed the habit of fighting back. The trend is up, the skills need a lot of work, but the canvas is filling up nicely.

All in all, a deserved win to North, who played some great footy at times. I'm not sure that their style will hold up against some higher-ranked teams, but they're still learning a new style, so we'll wait and see.

As for the Bloods, they'll just keep getting better.

Unfortunate? You chose to sit in an oppositions members grandstand, which is fine, but you complain because there was cheering! I didn't know that it was a crime for North supporters to try an urge on their team on their home deck, especially in what was a very frustrating yet important game in the context of the season for both sides. Maybe they should revert to silence like at some of the AFL games in town.

If the Eagles lose to North next week, you'll have two games in hand on us and you'll be two wins behind. Very possible. It might come down to Round 21.

r&b brings up an interesting point as I'm not sure which chanter of the "Roosters, Roosters, Roosters" he's referring to as controversy has recently broken out in the Prospect Grand Stands with a rebel chanter starting chants which has non plussed the regular starter of chants.
I have it on good authority that th original chanter claims that the new chanter throws out everyone in the Grand stand with his chants as they begin in a different area and timing is thrown completely out thus impacting on the resonance and volume.
r&b could have caught it at its worse today as competitiveness between the two factions has esculated recently.
Stay tuned for further info, a special meeting of members may be called soon to address this matter before things get violent. I even today suggested a new Rooster Rally to start at the old Grand Stand and finish at the newer Grand Stand to bring people awareness of this issue!

I kid you not! (well I do kid about the special meeting and rally but the rest is legit! )

I think the season is over after today. We got to do something about our slow starts. Thought it was a fantastic result from the reserves today. With only 18 fit men at the end of the game. Thoughts go to Brayden Fisher who taken to hospital. Also i hope Robbie Dejongh is ok.

To those that i said that playing Bennett. I am Sorry he has been a good focial point up forward.

Calm down, jaceace, I had no choice where I was sitting. In fact, the facilities provided by North Adelaide for opposition stats people are very good compared with most. On the other hand, your response to a long review adds weight to my notes about the supporters :)

It was also only a random observation, no more than that and was just a hopefully amusing aside. You're right, though, Wedgie, the first chant was started by someone else (sitting in the council area, I suspect). He was soon drowned out by the 'official?' chanter.

Ah, the joys of going to the footy.

Move one of them to the ground announcers/PA system position. They could not do a worse job, it could not be possible.

Anyone contacted Andrew Newton Jarman ? He knows how to get supporters involved !!! Well for a time anyway . Surely Jars could lead the chant to get it in sync ? Come on you Prospect people , clap nicely and in time .

I was one that haddago at WA for selecting Ryan Bennett v ST
I had originally thought it was a one off selection
Well today proved what a good player he is
His 3rd qtr was one of the most dynamic solo efforts seen by all
I reckon he kicked 4 goals and handballed the other to a teammate who posted the other goal

GAME SUMMARY
NA killed the game into a breeze by 1/4 time
WA did very well to almost catch NA
NA won the important last qtr to win the game

Both sides played it hard and tough
Both similar game plans
The scoreboard showed NA winning easy
But far from it NA had to work thier butts off to win this game

Good news
Both the big improvers in 2009

Bad news
Both drop numbers back in defence and this becomes a bit boring to watch
