Vale Graham Campbell

Post by robranisgod »

KG just announced on the radio that his close friend, Graham Campbell, has passed away at 85 years of age.
In addition to coaching Glenelg, Graham coached West Perth to a WAFL premiership in 1975 and coached Fitzroy to a Night premiership.
I always thought that he was very unlucky not to coach Glenelg to a premiership.

That is sad news (that we receive more and more these days). Graham certainly had the gift of the gab

He was ahead of his time. I remember when Glenelg 'controversially' picked Graham to coach them in 83 and started off horrendously. I think they were 0-8 or 0-9 and he got sacked but then was reinstated and almost made the finals in his first year.

I remember very clearly the saying, 'back it on footypunt'.

Started ‘83 0-8, got sacked by the board, players threatened strike if he wasn’t reinstated.
Went on a good run & missed the finals by a couple of games.
1984 still stings, screwed by the tribunal re Super then gifted Norwood the prelim with bad kicking.
Suffered from dementia for quite some time. Wouldn’t have met a nicer bloke.
RIP Graham.

@Rik E Boy mentioned on FB that he laid the ground work for Cornes in 85/86, hard to argue against that when the players were on his side.
