What's some of the best and worst of 2016 in your eyes?

-The Byes
-I like Thursday night footy but I thought 4 in a row was to much

Players who have taken the next step?

-From a Port point of view- Byrne Jones and Pittard. Trengrove as he was thrust in to the ruck.

Players who have disappointed?

-Hartlett, Brodie Smith

Programming, interpretations, etc etc

Bye before the finals is a joke!
Hate 4 umpires
Score review is a joke
MRP is a bigger joke
I actually like the deliberate out of bounds rule
I don't like the fact the Crows will finish top 4
you've gota keep on keep'n on .........

I'll start with some positives -

Whipping boy Jack Watts has come of age. 4 marks off his best season ever, already kicked 34 goals ( his next best was 22 ) and has finally cemented his spot in a side who is moving in the right direction.

Essendons kids. Standing in for some guns some Neville Nobody's have come in and, despite winning the wooden spoon they have, in the main, been pretty competitive and have made plenty of teams earn the 4 points over them.

Port's young Darcy Byrne-Jones. Coming in with injuries in the back half he's not missed a beat. Averaging 17 touches, 3 marks and 3 tackles per game, he's a genuine find.

Some of the more baffling -

How has the football world just shrugged it's shoulders and written off Fremantles 2016 season? Can they bounce back from this year to be a top 8 challenger next year? No Pavlich, Sandilands turns 34 in December and won't be the player we knew IF he goes around again. Is 2015 an aberration or the start of a long haul?

If this is the best list Hardwick has ever had at his disposal, why are they where they are and does he hold on?

Down right ridiculous -

Why are we having the weekend off when the football world should be getting ready for the first taste of finals?

Will they end up trialling the same rule as the SANFL where last kick is hand over?

From A Cat Perspective

Players who have taken the next step?

Rhys Stanley, Daniel Menzel, Tom Ruggles

Players who have disappointed?

Jordon Murdoch, Nathan Vardy, Steven Motlop

Programming, interpretations, etc etc

Out of bounds rule, Firrito Call, Goal Line reviews, Four umpires - Ridiculous.

The AFL are certainly interested in seeing the results the SANFL collect. At the beginning of the season Andy Maher on his SEN sports show was making a big point of it when he spoke with Marty Mattner and Brad Gotch.

Would not surprise me if the AFL gave it a go in the Pre Season

From West coasts perspective I actually think they are where they should be. Last year although they were so good with all the injuries they had I think they played better than they actually are. Being so good at Subiaco to so poor on the road. Although they have lost to Hawthorn, Sydney, Bulldogs(Etihad), Geelong and Collingwood( hadn't beaten them at the MCG for 20 years) are some handy sides. The Sydney game they were up midway through the 3rd then conceded the last 6 goals and Collingwood they hit the front in the last to then just roll over.

It shows how much the rely on Nic Nat.

What's some of the best and worst of 2016 in your eyes? sack the list manager. Traded in Jetta for Sinclair. Jetta hasn't reclaimed his form from a few years ago and Lycett is s spud. Sinclair would have given us 1st use of the ball.

Players who have taken the next step? I really love watching Brad Sheppherd play. Plays out of his weight division every week and hardly gets beaten. Jeremy McGovern. Just keeps getting better. Such a good mark. His brother at the crows looks like a beauty as well. Andrew Gaff is becoming an absolute superstar and could possibly win a brownlow. Shuey has stepped up as well. Could win a Brownlow this year.

Players who have disappointed? Masten.. Turns it over constantly and really hasn't come on as much a you would have liked. LeCras has had a poor season, Hill hasn't really fired a shot, Jack Darling needs to contribute more as a key fwd and help JK out. Wellingham against Melbourne his disposal by foot was the worst I have seen. McKenzie hasn't been great. They do say it takes 12 months to get back to your best but it looks like the game has gone past him. Hoping next year he will be better

Programming, interpretations, etc etc
Holding the ball is a joke. Deliberate out of bounds is even worse. Umpiring this year has gone backwards. Too many rule changes are killing the game. Too many players ie Thomas from North are diving or playing for frees and it is ruining the game

Bad: Confusing Umpiring. Not necessarily blaming the umps, might be the way they are directed to interpret and enforce the rules. Rule of the week seems to be another AFL directive still, no matter how much they deny it, and I'm not a fan of it. Supercoach still sucks! Rob Murphy's and Dane Swan's injuries and subsequent absence.

Good: GWS. Battle for Top 8. Dane Rampe. Marcus Bontempelli. Tom Lynch (GC). Boomer, Pav, The Dish, Boris and Jimmy milestones. The better games of the season with tight finishes (Syd v Rich and WB, Hawks v Crows). Brendan Bolton.

Ugly: Trent Cotchin and his Tigers. Melbourne v Gold Coast games.

The worst

The AFL giving the Hawks a dream run again
Thursday night footy
The umpiring 'rule of the week'
The Bye rounds
Week off before finals
Score review - should be All or nothing at all venues

The Good
Some of the teams that have been closer to the spoon than the 8 in recent years heading in the right direction.
The closeness of the top 8
Matty Wade is a star and deserves more respect from the forum family!

That's the frustrating thing about it. It could be a real positive. Exhibit A that shot for goal in the Demons v Suns game that was penalised. Any rule that relies on the common sense of the umpiring fraternity is bound to fail.

Opposite, the AFLs deliberate has been a lottery, the SANFL s is clear cut.
Umpires shouldn't have to guess what a player is thinking, so ridiculous but some people can't handle change.

This is legit from the advertiser today. Apparently this is Butcher embracing a tr mate after kick 1 of his 4 goals on the weekend.

So based on this clear evidence does Ryders suspension start again lol. Also good effort by Matt white to play as well........

I can handle change, I quite like the AFL's intent with the rule, agree the interpretation needs to be fixed up, but not to a rule that suits the round ball on a square playing arena. Some of the SANFL one's I have seen paid this year have been worse than some of the AFL ones even with the ambiguity taken out of it.

How have some SANFL decisions be worse than others?
It's either a free kick or it isn't with no guessing as to intent.
I haven't seen one wrong decision in the SANFL, it's either come off the boot/from a handball or it hasn't. No query, no controversy, no guessing.
I've seen dozens of blatantly wrong decisions in the AFL, different umpires are always going to guess/read minds differently/incorrectly.
Throw in the added bonus where the game has been more free flowing due to less throw ins in the SANFL.
