I'll defer to the Port aficionados, but I'd have to disagree. Yes, the 1979 Grand Final was characterised by the above nullifying approach, due to the conditions. But otherwise Port knew how to attack. I recall Delaney and Fiacchi working in tandem as a springboard for their attacking rebound IIRC - Fiacchi was formerly an average rover until successfully moved to a back pocket (game against Norwood in 1988, just after Anthony Williams tragically died?).

With the exception of about three years in the middle, in a bit over 20 years from 1976 Port had either Tim Evans or Scott Hodges at full forward, with plenty of Ken Farmer medals and 10+ goal bags), so I'd say they knew how to attack and score goals. Not as defensive as you might think.

It's the 70's, 80's and 90's, he wasn't paying attention then.

Port Adelaide also played this deliberate oob boundary game in the 50/60's.
Given Port were so strong in the ruck
Jeff Potter would just keep kicking it out on the full at the throw ins and work the ball toward their goals.
The umpires were not game enough to penalise this action, thank goodness the rule got changed.
The new oob rule penalty as I understand it must not come off the players body but below the knee only.

Just let them play footy then! Stop ******* with the rules every time there's a trend to either attacking or defensive play, it evolves on it's own accord and what worked 5 years ago won't work now and what works now won't work in 5 years from now.

You want them to being the round ball back and think they shouldn't have changed from the current rule to throwing it in?

You don't want a round ball but you're against rule changes which would include the rule when they changed round balls to their current shape.
You don't want the current rule but you're against rule changes which would include when the current rule was changed to the previous rule which you want?
You're a confusing little bunny Booney! ;)

Spoke to someone at Centrals who would definately be in the know yesterday and the new out of bounds rule change is 100% a trial for the AFL competition and was a directive from them

Especially given they have much bigger control over the NEAFL for instance.

I'm sure the afl is watching it very closely though

Reckon the SANFL made the rule and when the AFL heard about it asked to be kept in the loop about the feedback.

Think it works well and players just have smarten their approach to 'sheparding' the ball out.....
