Wonderful human being Colin Churchett, would always see him at the club on a Tuesday following his weekly round of Golf with his mates at GGC.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

My understanding is

1. A check-side is from the outside of the foot (ie the side where the little toe is nearest) - Hence the Victorians usually get terminology wrong.
2. A Banana kick is from the instep/big toe side of the foot which is far easier to execute.

Hence - A left footer would kick a check-side at an acute angle but a right footer at the same end would banana the ball from the instep. If the pair then walked across to the opposite side to shoot at the same goal from the opposing acute angle, the right footer might be using a check-side to curve the ball but the left footer would now have to banana the ball to achieve the curve from his instep> It all depends on if the ball is kicked from the outside or inside of the foot to make it curve.

Maybe this folklore passed down to me is just another perspective.?

Your understanding is correct.

The victorian commentators find it hard to comprehend the difference. Not sure why. Perhaps if it was invented in Victoria?

Ah **** em. It's a South Aussie export. No debate necessary.

Great read though

Not right really.
Check side is left to right kick for right footers from right of goals kicking the ball on the left third of the ball holding it sideways and right to left for left footers from left side of goals.
Banana kick is right to left kick for right footers from left side of goals and left to right for left footers from right side of goals.
