COLVILLE RETIRES

Postby mal » Sun Sep 07, 2008 5:51 pm

Star EG midfielder Gavin Colville has retired today.
What a sight to see the great man chaired off by his team-mates today.
Colville a 200+ gamer and twice runner up for the Magery Medal.
Sensational career.

PS
Colvilles last ever shot for goal today ....

One of those players who always commanded respect from an opposition, seemed to be a big part of their side whenever they were up and flying. A terrific servant of the SANFL in general when he could have easily skipped home for some bucks at any stage he stuck it out with the eagles - good on him.

Dont post a lot. (Get entertained enough by the quality on this website !!!) but there is no bigger fan than the Scratcher than me. I Remember when I brought my family-in-law over from Geelong in 96 for a weekend for a game and Gav was one of the the bar staff after the game. Even to this day they remember "that red-headed smiling lad from Geelong way". Gav, you held your head high even through the heartbreaks over your career. One of the real nice guys in footy who not even the harshest critic could find fault. Good luck mate !!!

Will always remember his speech after that 2004 GF debacle. With tears in his eyes "I cant look you blokes in the face, I am too embarrased" An absolute shame he wont be remembered as a (REAL) premiership player.

After the game today it was extremely emotional not just on the ground with the guard of honour for Gavin but also in our rooms. One because of the way we finished our season and two for the last game of Gavin Colville.

I must say many of us were moved to tears with the speech our captain, Mark McKenzie made regarding Gavin. What Gavin has meant to his team-mates and to all at the club was expressed with passion and great respect. Macca apologised to Gavin for the way we played in his last game.

Gavin's response was also very moving and his words to his team-mates and all the support staff came from the heart and will i'm sure be referred to in the future.
He could even have a go at himself over his last kick for goal but was pleased he got 2 effective kicks after that so it wasnt his last kick in league footy.

At Presentations our President also gave Gavin high praise for his wonderful 14 seasons with us 6 as captain and Scratcher finishes as a true champion of our club - one of the best.

Firstly well done to Gavin on a fantastic career =D> . I think he will be a chance to be with his mates Stephan Hall and Tim Inkster at Henley.

congratulations on a great career Gavin.I certainly admired the way you went about your football, and judging by the amount of times I had to abuse you( :D ), you always played well against my beloved Bulldogs.
Again congrats on a great career and good luck in your retirement.

I am not sad to see the back of Colville. He has terrorised Glenelg for his entire career...a champion footballer who has epitomised the strength and resilience of the WWTFC for a long time now.

Congratulations Gav.

As for what he might do beyond this year...does he harbour ambitions to coach? If so, given the way some Eagles fans have been sniping Fuller Shite all season, perhaps Gavin could work with Fuller next season in the hope of succeeding him when Fuller steps aside??? As ME said, a gig with the Under 18's would certainly make sense as well...

As CD and others have alluded to, Gavin was obviously very well respected by all and sundry at the club. I heard Luke Powell chatting about Colville on the 5AA SANFL Show last night, and it was moving to hear how high a regard the club hold Colville in and how much they will miss having him around the club in 2009 and beyond.

Pleasing to see Colville was able to get back into the league side late in the season and contribute effectively. He went out on his terms, which is not something every player gets the opportunity to do.
Is 2009 the year of the Tiger?
