Unfortunately the top ‘kids’ taken in the draft sometimes don’t develop into good footballers. Can hardly blame the recruiters all the time- they generally take the best available at the time, and most people assume those kids will develop and flourish. So much pressure on the top 10 picked to perform otherwise they are labeled as ‘spuds’. Bit harsh on a 17yo considering footballers generally don’t reach their playing peak until about 24-26yo.
Yes, and no. The good recruiting teams don't make many mistakes and it's no coincidence that the good recruiting teams are at the good clubs.
On the flip side good clubs develop good players and the three I mentioned ( Brisbane, Melbourne and St Kilda ) haven't been "good" sides for a while now, two of them are turning the tide though.

Port don’t develop their own either they just trade away their early picks for other clubs players

Swans have been historically very good at that. Drafting isn't an exact science, but there's been more Joel Selwood's than Kane Tenace's over the years I'd imagine.
Think the development of the young players often gets overlooked when assessing whether they turned out alright or not.

Poor troll, even by SA Footy standards.
2006 - Boak, R.Gray, Westhoff
2008 - Hartlett
2009 - Pittard
2011 - Wingard
2012 - Wines, Clurey, Neade
2013 - Impey, Byrne-Jones, Amon, S.Gray
2014 - Howard
2015 - Bonner, Houston
2016 - Marshall, SPP
18 of this years finals side from the draft. I've only names the ones that were drafted and played the elimination final, obviously have drafted others.
Polec, Dixon, Ryder and Ebert trades. Pretty good ones too, I reckon.

Re: 2017 Off-Season
I think Francis was always going to be a slow developer. Whoever drafted him would need to be patient as will whoever, if anyone, picks him up in this trade period.
A) He's a tall - they naturally take time to develop
B) He's a country kid. Not just from a country community, but an isolated farming community. There's not even a pub any more where he comes from. His whole family are naturally reserved people. and close knit.
C) He lost his brother. That takes time for young men to get their head around.
Just be patient with him. He will repay that.

When the opportunity presents itself to acquire 2 high quality KPP's in Ryder and Dixon, you do so without blinking an eyelid. No Port supporter in their right mind should object to the club doing these trades.
We had 2 lean years in 2011 and 2012 where we netted top end talent in Wingard and Wines, and last year we strategically traded to have 4 picks inside the first 2 rounds.
This year we have made a specific play for RFA's to fill some gaps in our list, and will hold a first round pick at next years draft.
I don't have too many criticisms over what our list management team has done this decade.
My concerns are not the young talent being injected into the side, it's their development. As a club, I feel as though our players stagnate a bit.

I agree, its an area where some improvement could be found, we don't seem to progress raw talent into raw output quickly or efficiently.

Re: 2017 Off-Season
You have needed to go get some ready made players because the draft picks haven’t come on as expected
Wines, clurey, SPP, the only players that you can be certain that will have great careers out of your last 18 national draft picks.
DBJ bonner Marshall should be good but not guaranteed

Well then it's an incorrect comment then as you said Port don't develop their own players,18 of the side that played in this years final have been developed by Port Adelaide. It's not a bad thing to bring in players from other clubs, heck, look what Hawthorn did with smart recruiting, but to say we just give away picks for players is wrong.

Will only be able to make a sounds call on all this in 3-5 years time IMO.

I agree with what you are saying, perhaps the club is bringing in these players as they do see issues with the development of players? When was the last tall forward the Power developed themselves? Probably Tredrea?
I think every club would take Ryder and Dixon if the opportunity arose.

Houston was a rookie so I didn’t count him but yes he will be good.
Howard has played 10 games in 3 years so it’s hardly a massive win yet. Jury still out

Re: 2017 Off-Season
It's, again, no coincidence that the lean years in the draft reflect the lean years in football spend. The clubs I noted above ( Brisbane, Saints and Melbourne ) have a chequered draft history as they have not been able to invest the money on the football department they would have liked.
I think if you're playing finals and 18 of the side have been drafted in you're going ok. In fact, Id be surprised if any of the clubs in the top 8 this year had less than 4 "imports".
