Re: Clubs in strife
In my opinion, clubs in all sports that dont have a good foundation, i.e. strong junior numbers and great hard working volunteers are going to struggle further and further.
We dont have the numbers playing sport at grass roots level like we used to.
The working population have to make a choice between sport and work now. Employers in trades and retail and others are very reluctant to employ people who play competitive sport on weekends. Blokes need to work the overtime more and more so cant play footy or cricket.
Kids are off working at Woolies or Coles or wherever, or just bone idle and sit around playing video games all day.
There is no solution, so my advice to all clubs is spend your time and effort in fostering a great junior program with as many participants as you can get.
Clubs that dont do this will fall by the wayside for sure!

For mine, Aldinga's been getting all of the 'positive publicity', but Kilburn is in a much worse position. 19 points all season...
The fact Aldinga nearly had a win on the weekend shows they're bad, but not as bad as the media would have it.

Aldinga gave them the possibility of a "miracle" recovery, hence a bit more to write about the following day. No point in doing it at Kilburn where they were absolutely no chance.
Plus, from outside, division 3 is not really relevant, whereas Aldinga plays in the top division of their competition. Aldinga also have juniors playing on the same day which makes it more attractive to the media.
Don't think this was about anything other than a PR stunt to benefit the 'Tiser.

Re: Clubs in strife
i found it funny that Kilburn were even being considered for a curtain raiser game before the AFL......what sort of message would that send the club they get rewarded for spending 70k plus a year in player payments to buy up the ranks only to cut payments and lose there team get pumped by 50 plus goals a game and then be rewarded with exposure at a afl match
i wonder since the meeting also will we see a change in the rules/law of the saafl to give them greater power so a repeat of kilburn joke does not happen again in a higher div

Classic AFL move really.
Try a public relations exercise without considering any endemic or consequential problems at the grassroots of the game.

I think the SAAFL does have the power, but have chosen to give the power to the clubs since their are the major stakeholders for the competition. The SAAFL allowed them to make the decision, which I personally don't see an issue with
