Not even close. Whilst Tony Abbott had his flaws, he was also very active in his community. His work the NSW country fire service was commendable.

Surely there should be a ruling if you decide to retire / quit within a specific time from an election that you forfeit a % of payout

And that's for all elected politicians

Not unusual - Weatherill said he would have stayed on if re-elected but wouldn't sit in opposition.
I'd be surprised if Marshall did the distance

Is $500k the cost of the by-election?
Why dont they just let the same party select someone like they do in the Senate?
