Sturt effectively lose 3 players due to one now going to their opposition

Does anyone know the contract lengths of the drafted player. I know some of nominees had 18month . A club like Sturt would be pissed to loose a player for the rest of the season for nothing and have that player against them later in the season..

That's the kicker isn't it.

To a club that gives nothing financially to the SANFL and yet expects the SANFL to change its rules to its agenda. They get a bye this week as well. Why doesn't the SANFL just say this is our comp and you play to our rules.

If we have to have a mid season draft I would love to see a rule implement like in world football where a player on loan cannot play against the club that owns him.

I understand in the Sturt instance they are now not the 'owners' of the player but I think it would only be fair if we adopted that principle and not allowed them to play against Sturt.

There is still an in-balance as clubs playing Port now have to play them after they have got two new recruits but I think a rule like the first sentence would be a morally fair way of operating.

Wont happen though because you can guarantee the week Port were to play Sturt will be a time that he is one potentially one good performance away from AFL selection etc etc etc.

It is already in place (thanks to South and Centrals) so McEntee will not play against Sturt this year.

Yes he can, but, Hawthorn will only let him if they are going to delist him at season end IMHO.

Not sure how it works if the Hawks reserves make VFL finals either.

My take on that was that Hosie could've come back and played but he didn't think it was fair to the rest of the squad. You can return to your original club if you're not required by your AFL club for AFL finals, i.e. not making them is how i understood it but i may be wrong.

Pretty sure that a player probably doesnt know the rules, not sure sturt would stop him anyway, not if they want him to come back to the club afer inevitably his 4 month sojourn ends

Nothing personal against the player, but I think that Sturt should insist on the rules. After all, a rule is a rule is a rule......even for PA (ha, ha , ha)

STURT has slammed the AFL mid-season draft, describing it as “abhorrent’’ and calling on the league to restrict its player purge to one per club.

Six days after losing exciting forward Ash Johnson to Collingwood and speedy midfielder Jed McEntee to Port Adelaide, the Double Blues say they will write to the AFL to express their concerns. Sturt’s SANFL finals hopes were virtually extinguished in the space of 30 minutes last Wednesday night when the Magpies swooped on Johnson with the third pick at the draft and Port took McEntee with the 13th selection.

The departures of the two Double Blues prime movers comes on the back of the retirement of dual Magarey Medallist Zane Kirkwood following a debilitating back injury and a season-ending shoulder injury to star midfielder Patrick Wilson.

“The timing of this draft is abhorrent to us and the other SANFL clubs,’’ said Sturt chief executive Sue Dewing, whose club sits seventh on the ladder with a 2-6 win-loss record.

“We see it has digressed from its original intent, which was to assist with mid-season gaps in AFL lists due to injury. It’s not that now, it’s simply clubs trying to get a jump on opposition clubs before the national draft and that’s what we’re finding hard to stomach.

“We are under no illusions, we know we are a pathway club to the AFL and we take that seriously, currently having 18 players in the AFL system, which is a testament to Sturt’s commitment to that pathway. But the timing (of the midseason draft) is abhorrent.’’

Dewing said club president Jason Kilic would write to the AFL calling on it not to allow more than one player to be taken from any club in the midseason draft.

“Jason will be writing a letter to the AFL suggesting maybe only one player can be taken from any one team,’’ she told FIVEaa. “Jason is going to suggest to increase the list sizes, take more (players) at the national draft, because the impact it has on us mid-season is damaging.’’

Johnson and McEntee were among four SANFL players drafted last Wednesday, along with Norwood’s Jackson Callow (Hawthorn) and Woodville-West Torrens’ Cooper Sharman (St Kilda).
