That's something we can agree on!
I played on him in b's a couple of years back and he was dead set shite. Didn't touch the ball against me, which doesn't say much about his football abilities!
DA, who did he play B's for? I can't remember him playing B grade. Have you got the right Coad?
Loby - back in 2005 at the start of the season. Round 3 or 4.
Yeah it's the right Coad - tall guy (chunky too - like me) number 21.
Was VERY surprised to see him playing A's in the return game in 05 and even more surprised to see him kick so many in '06.
no one's claiming Coad's a superstar, but you don't kick 60 goals in a team that doesn't make the finals unless you can actually play a bit. he can take a grab.

don't have any confirmed info on that, though i will ask around. last i heard 2 or 3 norwood ressies players. and one who has played 50+ league games. plus 2 or 3 A1 amateur players.
not sure if the amber boys are coming back or not? anyone heard? the younger one... i think his name is ash was playing for barossa last year and is pretty decent.
maybe scott burns to come back and coach them????
Wonder Boy.....I think you have hit the nail on the head when you say there is more depth in Central Div and that is why the comp is better. There are plenty of good players in the Country comp but they do not have the ex Ressies and League players running with them. Look at what happens to a very average side (Mt Lofty early 00's - 02's beaten by over 50 goals by Loby) when they buy the players to help out their young side. 4 -5 years on and they are a strong club and virtually unbeatable. It is the ability to get these players ( $$$ ) that makes this comp so strong. Most Country teams rely on locals and spend very little cash on high priced "recruits". It will be interesting to see how good the Country comp is this year with Kangies, Meadows, TV, Nairne, Kersbrook all spending $$.
i think that you are also forgetting that since that massive loss to loby the young devils that came up include broady artis stapes pencil to name a few. all players who start on the ground and have also taken teams down a notch on more than one A grade game. although the recruts are very good there was already alot of tallent at the club. they just got the support they needed.

I can take it like the best of them. If I couldn't, I wouldn't dish it out.
You can sledge the Devils all you like, but at the moment, we are premiers. That means we're the best team going around. Until some other team beats us and wins the flag, I'm not going to give in and say anyone is better than us.
When we got flogged, I copped it sweet. I hated every second of it, but it made me that much more determined to win a flag. Now I have 2.
When you are copping it from all directions you have 2 choices:
1. roll over and take it like a bitch, or
2. stand up and do something about it.
The Devils chose the second option and have reaped the rewards. Then everyone gets on our case saying we bought a premiership. What a load of shit. I bet your club spent plenty of coin over the years. It's not about how much you spend but how wisely you spent it.
We chose wisely and it paid off.
And for the record I don't bag every club, usually just Shanty!

AS IT WAS IN THE 70'S AND UP TO NOW 2007 DIV.2 IS EXACTLY THAT DIV.2
A HANDFUL OF GOOD PLAYERS IN MOST SIDES WHO COULD PLAY DIV1. BUT DON'T.
CHECK HOW MANY MAKE THE ASSOCIATION SIDE EACH YEAR.
I'D SAY NOTHINGS CONFIRMED ON RECRUITS UNTIL YOU THEY ACTUALLY PLAY FOR THE CLUBS.

da is correct recruit wisely and you can win premierships, specially after some lean years. something hahndorf and lobethal didnt do last year. one so called named player doesnt win a flag.
kersbrook can name as many ex players they like. they might win a div2 flag if they all front BUT they will be gone within a year and they will be in trouble like callington and gumeracha

play nice with him boys...
big statement no.1
1 - kersbrook will be the best team in HFL of both divisions, bar no one. brett, paul, roger james, josh francou and stuart dew are just the tip of the iceberg for who these guys are recruiting. add them to an already very competitive side (consider kane paues and westley, brad pearce and matt scott) and these guys will be awesome.
Can understand your optimism mate but honestly, how many games are Roger James and Stuart Dew going to play?
Without even knowing Francou, I'd highly doubt he'd play a whole season up here.

Although in my opinion I think all involved (players, coaches, supporters, etc.) would not mind if the HFL put half its time into addressing the umpiring issue. The game has to have them.
It has already been stated that they need another 10 field umpires a week this year with the loss of byes in both grades.
This will mean more pressure on clubs to supply for Junior grades maybe even B's.
The whole culture around umpires has to change. Who cannot remember instances like a 13 year old Goal umpire in the B's at Goat Park making a wrong decion at the South End and then being pelted with bottles and cans for the rest of the match. I think this lead to more wrong decisions cause he was now looking in the other direction, or an Under 17 umpiring under 12's at 8.30am doing the Committee a favour and being abused all day by some pretty fearsome characters.
Last season I saw some pretty ordinary displays of control by 2 umpires in Under 17s both in Country and Central all that testosterone. Yet come out to watch some pretty scary types in Country B's totally controled by a little fat fella that obviously had their respect.
The Central A grade umpiring last season was at its lowest I have seen in the Hills. I do like the idea of the Leprachauns in green for their first year. But more money, ideas, effort needs to be puit in by everybody to change this situation.
Just my point of view.
Couldn't agree more Alaska. I have been involved in games through all grades where club officials have been tearing their hair out 2 minutes before the first bounce because they couldn't provide an umpire (boundary, goal, or worse still, an agreed club central umpire). They run around desperately offering anything the club's financially capable of (free tea, beer, etc). Car Windows get wound up as they approach; suddenly everyone has something better to do. So some poor bugger eventually puts his hand up. If they're a kid, they'll be given anything white and so over-size they trip over. Then comes the issue of a whistle. No-one has one. And who has time to ensure the poor victim at least knows the rules? What a debacle! And so it goes on.........Come a few days later, poor, struggling clubs cop an HFL fine in the post, inevitably to do with some umpiring issue. I am not sure if the HFL ever sit down and set some long-term goals as most pro-active organisations do nowadays. They could certainly afford all-out remedial action to recruit and correctly train enough umpires in all grades, so that no-one need be embarassed by the whole mess anymore.

have to agree with 80's and ODB there JC, there is no way that all of those boys are going to go and play at kersbrook every week this season. and this is the perfect example of 5 or 6 players coming into a team for one year at the most (id assume they wont finish their careers there) and pushing hard training locals out of the team and risking causing long term damage to a club. alot of the time when you push players away from a club you struggle to get any of them back when the AFL boys are gone.

I'm not sure if you guys realise but the James Boys are locals to Kersbrook and the whole reason Brett left Norwood was to go back to his home club and finish his playing career and start his coaching career. I'd be very surprised if they left after 3 years let alone 1!!
As for Francou and Dew, they are mates with the James Boys and are playing up there for that reason. But I too would be very surprised if Roger (buggered knees) and Dew (lack of passion) played any more than 10 games each for the season.
I think over the next couple of years the James Boys will turn the Kersbrook club into a very succesful one unlike the effects of just recruiting one of two outside "big-name" players like Loby and Hahndorf have in recent years.

let's also keep in mind that kersbrook have always been a succesful club... hated as they are, i don't think they would've missed playing in the finals in the last 10 years. whoever said they are going to turn in to a cally or gumeracha should do some more research.

how r lofty getting the cash...????????
one more rumor. bumped into an ex birdwood player last night, who told me a mate of his ruckman now plays in the city, used to play for birdwood, not sure of his name, was offered $650 a game by mt.lofty. but turned it down to stay playing in the city. if it's true, that's ridiculous money.

That is a very fair call there Gimp. There is nothing better than seeing ex-gun juniors come back to finish off there careers with their club, and provided there are few, it can have a huge impact on the club. It’s surprising the people that come out of the wood work when this occurs! It happened at Loby, when Jake Sziller, the King brothers and James May(although he was a originally a Nairne boy but has families ties with Loby)…and they went on to win a couple of flags, having said that they were a pretty successful club b4 these boys rocked up anway.
The problem with Mt Lofty was it had been at the bottom for so many years despite having loads of gun juniors over the years, but a lot of them didn’t want to go on to seniors as they knew they’d just get toweled up week in week out. So they really had no other option, to get the locals back they had to splurge on a few players to turn things around. There’s now players popping up now all over the place wanting to play for the club…not just average players either.
Hopefully the same will happen at Kersbrook with the James boys jumping on board, who i'm sure will havng around the club for a number of years because you're right Gimp, they're locals. I’d say they’ll have loads of people jumping on board and fair enough too. It should be the catalyst required for them to turn into a very strong club. But if they can’t in the coming years make the jump to Div 1 b/c they don’t feel they haven't the depth, I think this would prove how great the difference is between the two divisions really is!
