why drivers when wishing to turn left at an intersection will only stop if necessary. the amount of close calls ive had is ridiculous from drivers who don't want to give way

can you describe the specific scenario? there isnt many where they dont have right of way (unless you are going straight)

OMG, I just got an email at work just this second asking pretty much the same question.
My new Mantra - I am no longer available to things and people that make me feel like shit

T intersections, coming from the bottom of the T turning left. No right of way.
Also, if there is a designated left turn lane, the turning car ALWAYS has to give way.

Its as if its a curved road, and you're taking a "left" onto a seperate road. Even though you're going straight, you're "turning" onto a different road, hence the indication. Really, your car isn't really facing straight when you indicate, and you have to turn the wheel left to go straight on.

I figure I'm clear because they don't have their right indicator on, that usually a good sign...
The amount of people that dont indicate at all is pretty high, so I dont trust people are going straight until they do. (or they have their left indicator on)
Take a spin around the Naweena round-about at Regency Park. You'll never trust anyone ever again.
