Peter Marker

Anyone know if Peter Marker is involved in footy anymore, what he is doing and is he still in SA?
I thought he was a great SA football person who you don't hear much about anymore.

i'd say he is still in S.A. going by this and he being a lawyer and all

A great player who became just as good a commentator - master of the deadpan understatement. Unlucky not to have won a Magarey and sits in the early to mid 70's Robran/Ebert/Blight/Bagshaw pantheon IMHO.

A fraction before my time but from what i've heard he must have been a great footballer. Some i've spoken to who saw him play said he did a problem with his kicking/disposal.

I really enjoyed his footy commentary in the 80's.

Have heard he doesn't have any involvement at all these days.

Can't agree with that, he certainly found Fred Phillis' chest too many times from an opposition supporter's point of view.

Absolute champion player, in fact my all time favourite Glenelg player. Highly skilled and tough as nails, a great player.

His commentary was at a time when callers were fair and informative, and today's clown callers would do well to emulate Marker's style.

might appear biased since ive followed the bays all my life BUT i agree with you McAmanac.

Super player, as a Norwood supporter. From memory, he was basically finished at 29 wasn't he, after sliding into the fence and wrecking his ankle??? Tried to come back over the next 2-3 years but was a shadow of himself, and his glory days, if memory not playing tricks.

Agree on his abilities as a player but disagree on his ability as a commentator. I found him bland and not offering much insight.

At one stage in the 70s he was copping a lot of head high tackles. I can vividly remember Fos Williams, then Westies coach, on the Channel Seven Sunday footy show telling Marker that he had a theory; namely that Marker was getting these knocks because he never kicked on his left foot and players knew that, so they knew which way he was going to go when he tried to baulk around them. Marker was surprised and intrigued by the theory.

he didn't slide into a fence it happened around the chf-hff area of the bay oval northern end (from memory it was against south but i stand corrected on that) & for those that were there all heard the bone break it was so loud

as a commentator he was as good as anyone going around & for punk i'll mention his comment with ian day...(to set it up so you understand it).....i think everyone knows david wildy hit steven kernahan & maybe 3 minutes later (it wasn't long) kernahan hit wildy knocking him out & putting him on a stretcher & as they were watching the replay ian day says to peter marker (similar words to this) "i think you could say he was going for the ball peter ?" pm replies "i think he's a better player than that ian" indicating that the ball was a long way away from the fist

I think the 80's were a golden era for SANFL commentators, Ian Day, David Darcy, Marker etc. Much prefer them to anything the VFL had then, and since (with the AFL).

Yeah around the CHF/HFF area. My mum had a huge liking for Peter Marker, and she recalls is vividly to this day. Says she was crying as he was taken off....

I'm too young to remember but from what I've heard, he was a GUN !!

Definitely in the Hall of fame. In fact he's on the Hall of frame print I have that's signed by himself, Cornesy, Super, Sticks, Bone, Scooter, Hodgy & Knuckles.

I don't think Glenelg had a Team of the Century. He may have "lacked the brilliance" of Russell Ebert, but he had the wood on him over their careers. I recall when Marker first appeared on the league scene, he was an instant success at CHF, then later migrated to the midfield where he dominated for years. Great player.

A big kick of the footy from the two games I've seen on tape from 1975 - Rd 17 and the GF. When he got the ball in the centre square, D.K Phillis was expecting the long kick to the goal square.

From what I could make out of him (and granted only going be video), what he lacked in flair to those names he made up for in hardness ... My old man always rated him (and trust me, he loathed the Bays for some reason).

Ebert v Marker was always a treat even for a Norwood boy. IMHO, Marker was the only bloke that could beat Ebert at his own game (Not always though). Of course, other than Rodney Seekamp..................
