Showdown 24

Talk on the national game

The tackle by Thomas on Bassett has been legal since the game has been has been around. However after Pickett done the same thing no K.Cornes last season i think the AFL hae cracked down on that type of tackle & Gerard Healy was saying in the commenary all clubs had received a DVD at the start of the year saying that this type of tackle is now illegal. So i thnk THomas will get suspended question is for how long. The stupid thing tho is that his tackle actually affected Bassett's kick so it cant be construed as dirty.

As for the bumps by Brogan, thomas & Tredrea. They were all in the side and were fair play and were done to protect the ball carrier IMO. Except for it might of been jericho who purposely drew the defender before giving the handball. He done it well but he opened himself up and Port were within their rights to hit him hard. I never heard any complaints from crows fans when Ricuitto used to hand the those types of bumps out on a weekly basis.

As for C.Cornes. What a Superstar. not afraid to talk the talk then has the ability to walk the walk. If only he had a few mates out there who could show the same committment (Motlop & Megahead specifically)

Not wrong. His change of direction is ridiculous. I reckon ive only seen him get caught once since hes been at the club.

The best thing is, unlike some other players who do similar, he never seems to do too much with it. He almost always either picks out a teammate or kicks a goal.

Its great to see a player like him turn his career around.

Some of these one eyed observations are most humourous.

Vince wins the Medal?
Did the vote givers not watch Bock,Douglas,Rutten,C.Cornes,P.Burgoyne,Johncock,McLeod....?
P burgoyne and Vince got the same votes 12 but vince won on a countback. C cornes was next with 8.

And Matt Thomas has been reported for his tackle on bass. rough conduct. but pickett did it to kane cornes at the MCG last year and got off. so the Afl set a precedent last year. but they may want to show players its not on now. could go any way for tommo

I can't believe P Burgoyne got so many votes. Obviously he has himself in his own Dream Team as Captain as it was the cheapest 41 touches you will ever see.

I noticed him, but didn't think he possessions hurt enough.

Best 3 on the ground (in no order) for mine yesterday were C. Cornes, Rodan and Johncock

Burgoyne running around in circles before walking out of bounds and getting pinged for deliberate is one of the most amazing yet funniest things I've seen in footy. What a brain fade. What an idiot. I seriously can not believe anyone would be that stupid.

Funny stuff indeed.
His reluctance to kick to a contest cost his side a goal and indeed that was the game's final margin

A great game of football. I hope Thomas gets off but I think he might be in trouble.

Chad Cornes was best on ground by a mile in my opinion. Rodan was also good for Port but it really was a very even team effort by the Crows.

Thomas has a 'duty of care' when he tackles a opponent. He had a chance of a normal tackle, or bump hi off the kick. But he instead of taking it in his own hands by making sure the player will feel its tackle, ensuring he gets hurt. I tackle like that but how it was said you can not tackle like that. The tackle has to movements first was a slight tackle with harder tackle which he didn't need to do. It cost Adelaide goal I think. The tackle is rough play and what if he broke a neck and ended up in a wheel chair. everyone demand a suspension. The afl has told the players they have 'duty of care' on the field to their opponents in bumbs and tackles. Also, brogan is a thug and power will play better without him. What came out of the game isboth teams are hard and crows players are fit and tough when knocks like they recieved to play on in a physical hard game.

P.S> I don't go for any of these teams.

I think Pettigrew is the one that might feel the wrath of the tribunal, pretty cheap shot. Thompson is a tough nut so he got up pretty well but i think he may find himself in trouble. Brogan's looks bad but it didn't look high or late, just off the ball, interesting how they look at that one, The basset tackle is unlucky but if they are serious about taking that out of the game then maybe he might get a game or two.

I agree that the tackler has a duty to tackle in a manner that won't result in a more thn reasonable chance of serious injury. The guy getting the ball should be able to dispose of it as well as he can without risking being thrown head first into the turf. There was no need for Thomas to go as far as he did. He was beaten to the ball and Bassett's only crime was sacrificing his ability to control how he fell to try to help the team. I have no problem with the message being sent to the players that they must do whatever they possibly can to ensure that the players they tackle are not at risk of serious injury beyond the normal risks. Bassett had disposed of the ball, and Thomas was within his rights to bring Bassett down. I don't feel he had the right to take it further by throwing Bassett headfirst into the ground.

Oh, and the only other one I saw was the Brogan hit on Jericho. The replays I saw were too fast for me to be able to tell if he got him high. If he did he's in trouble, if not then all's fair.

Unfortunately for Brogan though, he's a big man so he's more likely to hit a bloke in the head than a guiy who is the same height as the guy he's bumping!

a person that get underated all the time is ben Rutten. his job on treaders was great. has treaders ever beaten truck. if he was a fullback at a victorian club he would be a triple all australian now. and one funny thing is. on nova thismorning they asked bunji if there was any sledging in the game. he said that him and a couple of other crows gave ebert heaps because there was someone with a big MEGA HEAD sign in the crowd. and he said that kane cornes gave shit to ben rutten about his advert. its a shocker

his job on Tredrea was easy because Tredrea is sh1t.

in all seriousness, he is a great full back and is probably the best in the game at the moment.

He didn't throw him head first. He held on to him as he tackled him.

There's a lot of melodrama associated with this tackle.

My first footy coach - Lyall Williams - and every one that I've had since has said the best tackle is one which sees both arms taken. It would seem this is no longer the perfect tackle.

Treddres isnt and wont be the same player he was in 2003. But i dont think he is too far away from a BOG performance. he was good against the Cats, missed his opportunites against the swans and was never going to play a blinder in a game where most players are sitting centre back and he was on a top class defender. If every port player gave the same amount of effort as he did then the result may have been different. A few of his attacks on the footy resulted in stoppages when the crows could have been away.

Also good to see Chaplin back to some form. He was arguably our best player in our first 2 finals last season.

I saw Kane stirring Rutten, happened at the northern end, first quarter. It is a bad ad, hope he got paid well!!!

Tredrea is a shell of his former self. I know you should be wary writing off champion players, but i actually felt sad watching him last night. He is finished, IMO. Rutten is good, does get alot of help from Bassett and Johncock though.
