Should be 5 but we've already seen the conditioning from the AFL that this is only going to be 3 so he can play the grand final.

Self reporting has to be on the same day initiated by the player
There was contact made between the two clubs on Sunday that forced them to report it
The AFL are going to get absolutely roasted if anything less than 5 games

Does the AFL do suspended sentences?

I recall they might suspend portions of fines, but I can't think off the top of my head recent examples with respect to matches.

Irrespective of where you sit with what you think is worse, words or violence, if the AFL to come out and all of a sudden justify suspending a portion of matches just to let him play the GF, would be even more hypocritical than they normally are.
"We take this matter super seriously, unless it's a grand final, then we are happy to ignore it."
They'd be far better off coming out and saying huge bans aren't addressing the issue, so we are going to take a different path, returning to more reasonable length bans, and increasing education requirements.

They are either trying to help Rankine out with still playing in a GF if we can qualify, or there are other factors in play that they are taking into consideration that will reduce the suspension otherwise it would be done by now

I remember the incident and he was very gobby

Tex is going the defence that some nasty things were said to him
He's obviously having some memories of his defence - He just cant remember it meant nothing
