This is not going to end/start well...

I think you’ll find there is a new CEO in place now (Tim Watson mentioned he wasn’t a Goodwin fan) and Brad Green’s handing over the presidency to Shaun Smith in the off season.

Yeah I know all that but he if you want to ruin a good story.... :D
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Over $1m payout, that’s a nice bit of change to have a punt and get on the nose beers.

Bizarre timing though, don’t get sacked after coughing up the biggest 3/4 time lead but instead sacked after winning by 80

Who is next, Longmire, Simpson or Buckley?

They won’t go for an untried coach I wouldn’t think

Isn’t there a maximum of 6 months payout? He’s not on $2 million a year

The report is "near $1m" so if he's on $1.5+ then that's the 6 months.

No surprise that it seems that Glen Bartlett was right all along … if only they listened to him instead of sweeping everything under the carpet with nothing to see here.

Pretty sure he has a full payout clause in his contract so he has to be paid the full amount next year plus the remaining months of this year

Bizarre timing indeed.

Melbourne are all in with their longer term contracts for players which I would expect to backfire at some point in time.

Surely Brian Royal or Peter Sumich get the gig. They have applied for every job since about 1996 so well overdue to finally land one :)

Who will be the last player who played in the 2000s, to play an AFL match?

Debuts pre-2010 on current AFL lists:

2006 - Scott Pendlebury
2007 - (Travis Boak)
2008 - Patrick Dangerfield, Todd Goldstein, (Callan Ward)
2009 - Steele Sidebottom, Taylor Walker, (Michael Walters)

(Brackets = announced retirement.)

I don't think I've missed any. Steele is the youngest, born January 1991.

I didn’t realise he was still on an AFL list (Melbourne), Tom Campbell has been in the AFL since 2012 for 58 games

Dangerfield or Pendlebury.

Pendlebury, Dangerfield, Walker and Sidebottom all play next year ( Walker might retire when Adelaide win the flag ), Goldstein is done.

Goldy is cooked but if Draper leaves I wouldn’t put it past us to keep him on for another year even if only to play VFL and be an emergency

Dear Members,

I am writing to inform you that after 9 years at the helm, Simon Goodwin will be departing the club.

The Board and I came to the decision earlier this week that it is time for a new voice to lead our AFL playing group and program forward.

Simon has given every ounce of his passion and energy to our club over his 11 years here, and as we look to transition to our next AFL premiership, the Board believes that a new senior coach is required to maximise the opportunity ahead of us.

Obviously, decisions like these are never easy to come to, but ultimately, we have made this decision in the best interests of the football club. While Simon leaves an incredible legacy, it is now time for someone else to take the reins and bring with them new energy and new ideas to revitalise our playing list and program.

As a club we have confidence in our playing group and what it can achieve, this decision is about ensuring we maximise our potential and put the right person in place to drive us to our next AFL premiership.

While we have made the decision to part ways with Simon, that should not dampen the extraordinary legacy he leaves behind. Simon leaves our club as one of only four coaches in the club’s history to take our AFL program to a premiership and sits behind only Norm Smith, Frank Hughes and Neale Daniher, for games coached at the Dees. A legacy, he should be incredibly proud of.

On behalf of the entire football club, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Simon for everything he has given to the red and blue over the journey. The role of a senior coach is an incredibly demanding one, and despite the challenges along the way, Simon has poured his heart and soul into the Melbourne Football Club.

While this is the end of Simon’s tenure at the Dees, he will always be a Melbourne person, and we wish him, his wife Kris and their family, all the best in their next adventure.

Simon will finish with the club effective immediately and assistant coach Troy Chaplin, will step in as caretaker coach for the remainder of the 2025 season. Troy has been with the club since the end of 2016 and is well equipped and ready to guide the program over the next few weeks.

We will now commence our search for the next Senior Coach of the Melbourne Football Club. As you all know, this is a crucial appointment and one which will significantly shape the future of our club. The Board will assemble a panel to lead the search for our next Senior Coach.

We will confirm the full structure of the panel early next week, but for now I ask that today we focus on celebrating and thanking Simon Goodwin for his incredible contribution to our footy club

Mitch Cleary :

"Brad, did that last 30 minutes against St Kilda cost Simon his job?"

Goodwin: "Bloody Nasiah, ay?"

Regardless of how you may or may not regard him, well done by Simon Goodwin, firstly for turning up to the presser and secondly for the way he conducted himself during it.

Brad Green was fairly clueless though … talking up how great the bloke who they just sacked is, then when asked does the Board know what they need in their next coach, he says no. So how can you dismiss someone if you don’t know what you’re measure of success is.

Telling that the Board offered Goodwin the option to coach the last 3 matches but, quite understandably, he declined.

I would have thought the cleanest way to part ways was to make the decision after the season, or more prudently, to not give the bloke a 2 year extension last season, but to make a call with 3 matches to go borders on clueless territory.

Anyway, it’s done. It will be interesting to see if Goodwin ends up at another AFL club with the alleged baggage that goes with him
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.
