Clubs are cowards not bidding on these academy rort picks early, Ashcroft a f/s but a rort club should have been bid on pick 1

Getting sick of hearing everyone winge how the draft is rorted by father /son and academy picks getting to clubs for late picks so here is a solution .
All father / sons and academy players can be listed prior to the draft by the clubs that have access to them if they have the available spots on their list, that way all picks in the draft are as listed..
If clubs are lucky enough to have Father / son players who are top players good on them , it should go in cycles where each club get a father / son at some stage . With academy players if they spend the time and money developing those players .
For all the clubs having a whinge perhaps get off your arses and spend some money setting up academies of your own and developing players instead of spending big on that one recruit who is " going to make all the difference in that next flag "

I'm sure Carlton would love to set up an academy for every kid born in Victoria

Could set up Academies which have limits on number of players that can be in Academy which could be extended to all clubs ie limit of 50 Players in your academy squad each year

Wouldn't have issue if Academy players weren't included in draft

Neither F/Son or Academies are fair and equitable though.

Father Son has 4 forms of eligibility.
Academies North of the Murray are basically funded by the AFL.

Academies needs to be managed extremely well and can be a slippery slope to unequal conditions if not managed really well.

Only have to look at the EPL in which there is now a very lose form of salary cap (yeah i know its a rabble etc) but whats essentially happened is the big clubs with big money have just loaded all of that into the academies and using it as a way to get the best young talent at an early age. Relocating families, finding parents jobs etc etc is simple ways some of the big EPL clubs do. Man City and Chelsea have over 200 kids in their acadameys.

You then only have to look at the American sport system and how the colleges were 'grooming' talented high school kids at an extremely early age.

Both of those countries that have very flawed academy style systems are now in a position where more than ever before the rich are getting extremely richer.

The AFL just has to make sure it stays strong with its vision for the academies and doesn't let it turn into the shit show those countries now have.

The pro leagues in the US have open ended drafts with no academy selections or anything - forget the college system, focus on the Pro Leagues.

I understand the need for Academies in QLD & NSW as the guys in the academy likely don't take up Aussie Rules otherwise. Needs to be a better balance though of how it works.

NSW is divided in half between GWS & Sydney. If you show one iota of footy ability, you're included in one of the many academy programs. Reckon they start them at U13 level, too. I'm assuming QLD works the same way.

Their policy seems to be "throw enough lines, you'll catch a fish eventually".

I think we should get all the academy players for free.

Fremantle and Essendon have both made signings on the first day of the Supplemental Selection Period (SSP) with Quinton Narkle joining the Dockers and Jaxon Prior becoming a Bomber.

The complete and utter mockery that is the AFL (tempted to leave it there) Rookie system.

Brad Crouch who was Rookie listed by St Kilda last week will now retire as the Rookie listing was used to enable him to be paid out and not play this year because his one yes one game in 2024 triggered a 2025 contract worth $550,000.

Surely at its most basic the name 'Rookie List' needs to be removed and maybe something like Supplement List introduced or some rubbish.

Or just have one squad of players, you're either in it, or not.
