How are they allowed to publicise his name?
Don’t they have the 3 strike policy anymore?

The AFL has confirmed Melbourne Demons utility Joel Smith has been handed a mandatory provisional suspension after testing positive to cocaine.

Smith's suspension is effective immediately after Sport Integrity Australia informed him he had violated the Australian Football Anti-Doping code.

In a statement, the AFL revealed Smith was tested after Melbourne's round 23 game against Hawthorn.

"The AFL confirms that a mandatory provisional suspension (which is effective immediately) has been imposed on Melbourne FC player Joel Smith following notification to him by Sport Integrity Australia of an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) and a potential violation of the Australian Football Anti-Doping Code," the statement read.

"It is asserted that a sample provided by Smith during an in-competition doping control test on 20 August 2023 returned an AAF for the presence of cocaine and its metabolite benzoylecgonine being a prohibited substance under the code.

"Smith was tested after the round 23 Melbourne vs Hawthorn game on Sunday August 20, 2023 and was notified by Sport Integrity Australia last week in relation to the finding.

"The AFL was made aware of the test results at the same time.

"The matter is now progressing in accordance with the code, initially involving further investigation by Sport Integrity Australia supported by the AFL. In the interim Smith will not be part of Melbourne's football program.

"The AFL is unable to make any further comment at this time."

Probably a good thing they did, otherwise we'd be seeing posts like:

This is why Noble got dropped from Collingwood.
This is why the crows didn't end up taking Petty.
No wonder the pies gave JG away for nothing.
Etc
Danny Southern telling Plugga he's fat, I'd like to see that!

The code was updated on January 1, 2021, whereby “an athlete who has tested positive to a Substance of Abuse’ in-competition (which includes cocaine), the sanction is only three months if the athlete can prove the substance was used out of competition and was unrelated to sporting performance’’.

And that’s why is said we shouldn’t speculate, two of those names had been spoken about a lot today

Weve all grown up in sporting clubs, highly unlikely Joel Smith is a lone ranger going rogue.

This might show my age, but yes I have grown up in sporting clubs and never seen a single person take anything harder than a pint or a smoke of something. Could also be the clubs I grew up with.

I don't think whuffer is referring to the substance but the fact it's rarely ever one person involved. As in your example, probably wasn't just one bloke having a cone on his own.

You don’t strike me as that naive mate.
We’re the same/similar age and it was everywhere in the clubs I played at.

Did he not test positive on game day?
Pretty sure that's in competition.
