Torrens University SA U18 Team – Game 4

A settled Torrens University SA U18 line-up is preparing to tackle Western Australia in Perth on Saturday afternoon.

Building momentum from a spirited 19-point win against Victoria Country in Melbourne, the Croweaters have added midfielders Trent Tattoli and Declan Gladigau, together with defender Oscar Talbot, to the extended interchange bench for the clash at Optus Stadium.

Central District wingman Tattoli returns after overcoming a corked thigh which kept him out of the side which earned an opening victory at Ikon Park last Sunday.

Strongly-built key forward Tyler Welsh will get another opportunity at the goalmouth after booting five goals against Vic Country while fellow under-ager Sid Draper could potentially sew up SA’s MVP award with another strong display in the midfield.

Exciting forwards Jack Delean and Ashton Moir sprang to life by booting six goals between them against Country so they will also be ones to watch from coach Tony Bamford’s outfit.

Defender Bodie Ryan was SA’s best after putting the clamps on likely No.1 draft pick Harley Reid after he booted the first three goals of the game while captain Will Patton and vice-captain Alex Holt form a composed back six for the visitors.

Starting at 3.30pm SA time, the match – to be a curtain-raiser for the Fremantle v Essendon match – will be live streamed on the AFL’s website.

Torrens University SA U18 team defeated by Western Australia

The Torrens University SA U18 team has had its colours lowered by Western Australia in Game 4 of the AFL National Championships in Perth.

The Croweaters’ captain tallied 19 disposals and a significant 11 rebound 50s as he battled hard against the tide in the backline.

Under-age midfielder Sid Draper capped off his brilliant carnival to be SA’s leading disposal-winner with 20 while also collecting eight inside 50s.

Hard-running Loch Rawlinson and talls Will McCabe and Patrick Weckert also drew praise from coach Tony Bamford and his coaching panel.

Strong-marking forward Tyler Welsh followed up his five-goal haul in Game 3 with another two against WA, to be his side’s only multiple goal scorer.

SA finishes its 2023 campaign with a 1-3 win-loss record, earning a victory against Victoria Country at Ikon Park in Game 3.

Torrens University SA U16 Team defeated by Western Australia

Inaccuracy has cost the Torrens University SA U16 team victory in its opening game of the AFL National Championships as it succumbed to Western Australia by five points in Perth.

Despite having five more shots on goal, the Croweaters were unable to place the Sandgropers under significant scoreboard pressure as they booted a wasteful 1.9 in the third quarter.

Trailing by just eight points at the final change, Julian ****’ charges outscored the hosts in the fourth term but again, kicking 3.4 to WA’s 3.1 wasn’t enough to reel in the deficit.

Half-back Luke Candy was recognised as SA’s best performer in Game 1 while captain Dyson Sharp and his deputy Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier were also strong contributors.

Full forward Dougie Cochrane, the son of former Port Adelaide and North Melbourne midfielder Stuart Coachrane, was SA’s only multiple goal scorer with two majors.

SA will now turn its attention to its remaining fixtures on Tuesday July 4 against Victoria Country at Heritage Bank Stadium on the Gold Coast and Friday July 7 against Victoria Metro at Fankhauser Reserve, Southport.

Torrens University SA U16 Team defeat Victoria Country

The Torrens University SA U16 put on a dazzling display in the wet conditions to blitz Victoria Country by 73 points in Game 2 of the AFL National Championships on the Gold Coast.

Even driving rain at Heritage Bank Stadium couldn’t prevent the Croweaters from playing a classy brand of footy, as they kept their rivals goalless for the final three quarters.

At every opportunity, coach Julian ****’ charges moved the ball intelligently with speed and through the corridor, resulting in 19 more inside 50 entries and 18 more scoring shots for the afternoon.

And even on the odd occasion there was a fumble, the SA boys would knock the ball forward into a dangerous space or into the path of a teammate to ensure maximum impact.

Torrens University SA U18 skipper Dyson Sharp led from the front with a dominant performance worthy of best afield billing, racking up a game-high 33 disposals, together with five tackles, 11 clearances and nine inside 50s.

Fellow midfielders Jim Kelly (26 disposals, six clearances, six inside 50s), Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier (24 disposals, five clearances, five inside 50s) and Louis Kellaway (27 disposals, four tackles, four inside 50s) were also hugely influential in the result.

Tall utility Aiden Schubert hit the scoreboard with a game-high three goals, 12 hit outs and 18 disposals while Joshua Reichelt earned praise for his performance in defence with 20 disposals and five rebound 50s.

SA had the opening three goals of the game on the board – two to Schubert – inside the first 20 minute of the first term before Victoria Country would boot its sole major for the match just a minute before quarter-time.

Sam Cumming and Lachlan Sands were quick to pile on the scoreboard pressure to start the second stanza with consecutive goals inside five minutes.

And when Kelly coolly slotted a lovely finish on the run from 40m in the 10th minute, the Croweaters had suddenly earned a commanding 34-point advantage.

Having taken a 43-point lead into the half-time break, SA was expecting some genuine resistance from Country early in the third term.

But it never arrived as SA vice-captain Oudshoorn-Bennier kicked a pair of goals within three minutes of the ball being bounced to start the third quarter.

Croweaters captain Sharp broke clear with a centre clearance which ended up inside 50m as Oudshoorn-Bennier crumbed beautifully and snapped from 45m near the boundary.

Oudshoorn-Bennier remarkably found more space to be on his own while kicking his second with a snap from 20m out directly in front.

It was indicative of their dominance and determination to respond from a frustrating Game 1 loss to Western Australia, in which SA squandered opportunities in front of goal.

Now with a 1-1 win-loss record at the Championships, the Croweaters will prepare to face arch-rival Victoria Metro at Southport on Friday.

South Australia 3.3 7.7 11.9 12.12 (84)

Yes, Unley Oval is being dug up at the end of this season. Thanks mainly to State Government funding, new drainage and irrigation systems and turf will be laid once the warmer weather starts. It should be a big step forward and help the players with their training and playing which are currently compromised.
Cricket wickets will remain which is not ideal from a football perspective but a few ovals are in the same boat.
It was always hoped that the surface would be replaced, as part of the redevelopment.
