5/176 in 38.4 overs (about 4.6 RPO) to 6/297 in 61.4 overs (about 4.8). Root and Bairstow put on 121 in in 23 overs (5.26).

Bairstow selection justified after day one.

He’s actually an opposition player you don’t mind seeing bat, just has that decent bloke vibe.

Pretty even day I think, not losing a late wicket was big.

Hope we stick to our plans and bat for two days and finish 200 in front which is possible on this pitch.

If you want to bat in fast forward be our guests, we’ll bat our way and leave you 200 behind going into day four.

Rope a dope.

In all seriousness if you win a toss on a pitch that isn’t doing much and put 380 on the board then it’s about a par score. We just need to dig in here and put 500+ on the board. I’d take where we are at the moment however the jobs over to our batsmen. Hazlewood said it well imo - Don’t care if you score 380 in a day or in 2, it’s the same score….

Interesting decision to declare on 393 when batting 1st in the friendliest batting conditions one could wish for. I reckon par score is more like 450 - 500

So how would Australia have felt about the declaration? I think they would have been ecstatic knowing that if England didn't who knows what they may have ended up with ? The only downside was that they had to bat for 4 overs before stumps. Whats the big deal about that? It what opening batsmen are in the team for. Would it be any easier for them if England batted on into Day 2 for 30 minutes and smashing another 30 - 40 to frustrate them and then have only 10 minutes to rush off an prepare? NO !
Really hope Aust bat for 5 - 6 sessions here and grind the Poms into the dust to make their decision look stupid.

Surely the Aussies are sporting the bigger smiles after day 1 despite their bowlers being touched up a bit

Agreed on the declaration, if they had of lost one more wicket then go for it as Anderson doesn't want to bat anyway but with root flying just keep going. Stokes has been consistent in doing that declaration though even on flat tracks, it's just his MO.

Let's just wait to see how Anderson and co with the cloud cover expected today, as I said previously overhead conditions can play a huge role in england so might not be as easy today.

Keep making roads because it’s going to take its toll on the older bowlers at some stage, even if it’s not this Test.

Yeah agreed. I've said all along I don't get the logic of preparing flat tracks against the Aussies as I don't see how we get 20 poles as what happens in Australia when we bowl. Not playing Wood or having Archer available is going to be costly I'd say.

Great nights entertainment but paying for it now

Way England played sort of have you transfixed to watching all night as you just didnt know what was going to happen

Joe Root, splendid innings, back to the old Joe pre Captains days, never looked like getting out,

Looking forward to see what tonight brings
