The best AFL team of the modern era.

Have Richmond eclipsed the others as being the best team of the modern era?

The Hawthorn dynasty probably still has my vote, although Brisbane was pretty awesome and produced 3 Brownlow medallists.

Point of Order. Hawthorn won a Premiership in 2008, so I believe your date range is incorrect.
1961, 1971, 1976, 1978, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015.... And don't you forget it!

Then finished 9th and 7th, hardly consistent dominance.

My point being 4 flags in the "premiership window".

The best "team" was Geelong in 2007.
The best dynasty was Hawthorn.
Richmond's window is still well and truly open to pass the Hawks though.

It'd be interesting how different we may hold clubs if Geelong had won in 2008 and Richmond in 2018 like they both should have.
Ironically 2018 was the only recent year Richmond were minor premiers.

Hawthorn '13-15 had the benefit of the expansion clubs coming in and taking the top end talent from the competition pool.

Trading from '11-'13 was mental, sides were scampering for improvements as Gold Coast and GWS took all the top end.

I'll say it here and now, Hawthorn should be 4th in this list if you're assessment is thorough.

I think the best team was either Brisbane 2002, Geelong 2007 or Richmond 2019.

Brisbane is the only team in that lot that won 3 in a row so for mine they are the best!

Also have to consider who the sides were being challenged by :

Brisbane had Essendon coming off the remarkable 2000 season, Port stepped up in '02 and '03

Geelong had St Kilda and Collingwood biting at their heels.

Richmond toppled Adelaide who looked invincible and a hardened Geelong after a soft one over GWS.

Hawthorn copped Fremantle, Sydney on their last legs at the end of an era and West Coast on the way up.

Please, Port win the Ansett Cup in 2001 and the Wizard Cup in 2002, if winning two premierships in two competitions in two seasons isn't note worthy I don't know what is!
