Shocked and shattered to find out he was AFL trade bait, Ryan Burton also knew it would be pointless to hang on at Hawthorn.

Burton has spoken of the raw emotions last month while holidaying in the United States, when his manager broke the news that the Hawks wanted to trade him to Port Adelaide.

The 21-year-old defender was a key to the trade that sent Port star Chad Wingard to the Hawks.

Burton grew up a Power fan and he said that made the trade much easier to accept.

"When your name gets thrown up for a trade, it's never a nice thing," Burton said.

"I guess the shock and (I was) a bit shattered that the club was trying to get a deal done, it wasn't the best thing.

"But the fact I was getting to come home, to a club I grew up loving, just made it a lot better."

Burton spoke on Monday, officially his first day of pre-season training at Port.

But the defender went to the club last week to settle in and start work.

Burton was in LA when his manager first made contact and broke the news that he might be on the trade table, despite being under contract.

He went to bed not thinking too much about it, but by the next day it was clear that the Hawks were serious.

About a week later, the deal was done.

"Once you get put up on the trading block, you don't really feel comfortable going back unless you're 100 per cent wanted," he said.

"Port was on the other end and it was always a club that was in the back of my mind to go to maybe, down the track.

"It made it a lot easier."

Burton spoke to Port coach Ken Hinkley and Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson, but mainly went through his manager.

He would not go into the conversation with Clarkson, other than his football future and that Port were a good fit for him.

Burton said he is not out to prove a point to the Hawks.

"Here I'm just coming in as a player ... knuckle down and play some good footy," he said.

He can also see the positive side of being in a trade that included Wingard.

"He's a two-time All-Australian, so if I'm ... in a deal with a player like that, it must feel sort of nice," Burton said.

"That's how I looked at it.

"But again, it was shock, it took me back a little bit - I obviously had to work through a few things.

"Now, getting to come back here, just excited."
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

No, no much at all there. I struggled to really follow his reasons for wanting to go to Carlton If it's not money.

High-profile North Melbourne recruit Jared Polec admits he’ll face heightened scrutiny on his performances after dumping former AFL home Port Adelaide for Arden Street.

But if he’s going to have butterflies ahead of the new season, including two clashes against his former club, they haven’t appeared yet.

Polec, along with former teammate Jasper Pittard and fellow North newboys Aaron Hall and Dom Tyson, presented for pre-season training this week.

Polec has gone through the experience before, switching from Brisbane to Port after three seasons, and knows expectation is around the corner.

“It’s still early days … at the moment I don’t feel pressured,” he said.

“I’ll definitely feel pressure come February, March.”

The 26-year-old denied bad blood from his move east, saying he was still in touch with his former coaches.

“Me, Kenny (Hinkley and Michael) Vossy, we still talk pretty regularly. It’s all good,” he said.

Pittard’s situation was slightly different, with player and club agreeing it might be best for a fresh start.

Pittard was named in the extended All Australian squad in 2016 but hasn’t found the same groove since.

The 27-year-old suggested his role in blue and white would be firmly on the halfback line.

“Coming and adding a bit of my running game to the back line is where I see myself,” he said.

“I’m open to playing new positions if that’s what Brad wants from me. The majority of my footy will be played from the back line.”

Alongside Pittard and Polec, Aaron Hall and Dom Tyson joined the club in a busy season of recruitment for North.

Pittard said North’s surprise flirtation with finals during their 12-win season sold him on the Kangaroos, though it’s not the first time he and the club had been linked.

“I don’t think many would have had North finishing that high (in 2018),” he said.

“If we have a great year next year we’ll become a club that players really want to come to.

“When I was signing my contract last year there was some enquiry … I talked to Brad about (joining North) even back to the draft camp many moons ago.

“They’ve always been sniffing around a little bit. I’m pretty happy they were still sniffing around at this trade period.”

Polec said the player movement suggested a tweaked game plan from coach Brad Scott.

“Bringing us four in, you can tell they’re going to try and bring their offensive running game up to speed,” he said.

“And they’re looking pretty good.”
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Crows games were attended by 150k more people than Carlton games in 2018 (according to https://afltables.com/afl/crowds/2018.html)

2018 average crowds :

Adelaide 37,440
Carlton 34,231

With no Friday night games, buried away on Sunday arvo's that isn't going to go up.....

You could have left it at "Didn't wanna be at the Crows" ;)

Carlton will win a flag before the Crows do.

Might be in 20 years but it’ll still be before the Crows.

I would suggest Turbo is referring to games against Richmond, Collingwood, Essendon, Hawthorn etc that usually attract well over 50k.

Gee Mitch would want to get his body right to play in the next flag at Carlton if that's the case ;)

Think you're probably right, but the flipside is then some of the remaining games in front of vastly smaller crowds than the Crows play in front of

St Kilda have pick 4, 36, 46 and 67 and reportedly offered Gold Coast pick 4 in exchange for picks 6 and 24.

This would have given Gold Coast picks 2,3 and 4 and potentially all the SA talent of Lukosius, Rankine and Rozee.

If that's true, Gold Coast have ****** that one up.

If they think the player they want will still be available at pick 6 it doesn’t make sense.

Not if Carlton draft Rankine. I think Gold Coast are keen on keeping 24 TBH

Gets them into the 2nd round in a deep draft, St Kilda then get two inside the top 24.

GC though would have got 3 inside the top 4, what an offer!
