Who is the "Greatest Ever Sportsman"?

Postby Bombers4EVA » Tue Jan 30, 2018 1:08 pm

Who do you personally believe would be the "Greatest Ever Sportsman or Sportswoman"? Me personally I reckon it would have to be "The Fed Express".

Is it though?
Ali
Bradman
Jordan
Nicklaus

Just a few that spring to mind who would be at least on par to Federer in their chosen sports.

I love Federer but he isn’t even the greatest tennis player ever let alone greatest sportsperson. That would be Serena Williams. For tennis that is

(Though the title does say sportsman so maybe I’m nit picking a bit [emoji3])

Serena Williams - 783 wins, 130 losses (85.76%), 23 Grand slams, career titles 72
Roger Federer - 1139 wins, 250 losses (82.00%), 20 Grand slams, career titles 96

Williams was head and shoulders above her competition for a long time, but i'm sorry for me Federer is the greater out of the two - his competition has been I believe harder over the journey.

Both greats in their own right though.

Professional Rugby League player and arguably the best play maker in the game at one point, premiership player, NSW State of Origin representative, then moved to boxing and has been a professional boxer for best part of 18 years - 48 wins from 56 fights and world champion in 3 weight divisions.

The ability to dominate/sustain success in two vastly different professional fields over a 25yr period alone is a feat.

"Greatest Ever Sportsman/woman/person" in my view encompasses not just the athletic achievements of the person but the manner in which they conduct themselves on and off the playing arena. That's Federer.

Rubbish! Then they'd just be called "Greatest Ever Person"

Judge solely on their sporting achievements and contributions to the sport I say.

Sportsmanship is as important as winning when scraping the cream off the top of the sporting elite barrel.

We're comparing different sports, some played in 4 or 5 countries, some played world wide, in different era's, some professional some amateur, with different technology, clubs, rackets, bats and across two genders.

Something has to split the two and IMO it's the level of sportsmanship and humility shown by the true champions that elevates them above all else.

For mine, in the argument :

Federer
Jordan
Bradman
Slater
Ali
Pele
Gretsky
Phelps
Navratilova
Serena Williams
Graf
Ruth

You sir, are drunk!

Statistically, It's impossible to determine, how do you determine the greatness of any sportsperson over another in a different sport.

What makes Fed's 20 grand slams more impressive than Bradmans centuries, or Michael Jordans stats, or Ayrton Sennas F1 wins?
