Take a look at the flight radar over Europe and see the gazillion planes in the air at any point in time.

Yes it is, and a flight from Paris would most likely flown overhead of Libya. Although I would have thought most commercial airlines would avoid Libyan airspace...

Yes it is, and a flight from Paris would most likely flown overhead of Libya. Although I would have thought most commercial airlines would avoid Libyan airspace...

Yep, they would surely head over the Mediterranean ASAP? Plus, Cairo is at the Northern tip of Egypt so there would be no reason to fly "over" Libya.

True story when I flew to Europe for the first time via the middle east. Remember checking the in house flight data and see us directly over Iraq my next thought was if things went pear shaped in the next 45-60 minutes getting out of this tin can is the least of my problems.....

Didn't think about that until MH17 went down.....32,000 foot and below was no fly, they were at 33,000

A few years back I was flying SYD-DFW which was then the longest (by distance) commercial air route on the planet. I was flummoxed to see that in spite of this, the plane flew around the corner of Mexico rather than straight across it. Doing a bit of research on returning I learned that flying over a sovereign country's airspace typically involves paying a fee to that country. It must have been cheaper to carry a bit of extra fuel than to pay off the Mexicans.

I do not know what treaties Egypt might have with its neighbours but presumably the same applies: Making a dog-leg across the tip of foreign airspace is avoided for reasons of economy more than safety.

I've flown through Dubai a few times in the last couple of years, and one of them was at night and it was very clear, and for miles and miles I could see a snake of lights. Turns out there is a huge fence between Iraq and Kuwait

Ms RustyCage went to Melbourne for a conference. Left something she needed in her office in berri. Being the best boyfriend in the world as I am (cough bs cough) I told her Id pick it up from berri. Id then go to the footy, and get the last flight to Melbourne tonight.

All good until I get to Berri (a 2hr 20min drive) and realise I left her damn office keys in Salisbury.

Attempt at plan B of getting in the office didn't work so missed getting back in time for the footy.

So now I'm on my way to the airport, have missed the footy, spent however much on flight, hotel and bus home tomorrow night, and didn't even get what Ms Rusty needed
