Chad Cornes will be very happy with that news. I couldn't seeing him make the seniors though.

Yeah it looks unlikely at this point, Ruben. He would need to improve his speed, as well as significantly improve his inside game to add value to PA, as that Polec/White type line breaker.

Hopefully a strong pre-season sees him over his injury concerns, and anything can happen.

I was discussing this with @Failed Creation last night- in what is considered a very weak draft after the first round, it is a risk that is well worth taking, IMO.

As noted above :

THE prized signature of Hamish Hartlett has been secured by Port Adelaide, with the dangerous defensive midfielder signing a contract extension that will tie him to Alberton until at least the end of 2021.

The deal makes him the longest-contracted player on the Power’s playing list, keeping him at the Power until at least the end of season 2021.

Hartlett, the Power’ highest ever selection at the national draft (Pick No. 4) resisted reportedly large offers from rival Victorian clubs to commit to Port long-term.

Leading up to his deal, he told portadelaidefc.com.au the only guernsey he wanted to wear was “a Port one” and that he was looking to remain based in his home town of Adelaide.

Hartlett originally played for inner-southern suburbs club Edwardstown and was drafted from West Adelaide, where his brother Adam currently plays.

The deadly right-footer has wowed Adelaide Oval crowds with a booming kick for several years, having overcoming early career injuries.

He told portadelaidefc.com.au after signing his new contract the chance to play into his prime with the Power was an opportunity he looked forward to.

“I love playing with these boys and look forward to getting back in November, having a huge pre-season and having a crack at season 2016,” Hartlett said.

“This a great club with great supporters and I’m looking forward to repaying the faith the club has shown in me.”

He was contracted for 2016, so a 5 year deal added on to that.

That's a longer deal than I would normally like to see my club offering, however, he's a top 10 pick, Adelaide boy with no intention of going anywhere and he's developing into a top flight midfielder. I'm happy enough to back the clubs decision on this one.

Depends on the coin I guess but 6 years is a long time for someone who was never going anywhere.

I don't think it would be huge. Given he's an Adelaide boy, gets to stay at home with family and friends, locks in his long term future, he would have had to give up something to get that deal.

My guess? I'd say $450k p.a +/- so just above average.

It's a win/win for both Port and Hartlett I think - secures his career and future for the next 6 years at a likely decent pay packet, and one less Port need to worry about trying to hold onto in the coming years, and get a long term, one club player out of it.

Awesome news for Hammer, and the PAFC.

Its been well documented in the days post Hawthorn's GF win, how they have managed to keep their core group together (minus buddy) from their 2001-2008 drafts, and trade their way to sustained success. If we manage to secure Chad and Ollie to long term deals next year, we would have done something similar with our core in Boak, Gray, Hartlett, Wingard, Wines, Trengove, Ryder, (Dixon if he gets here), Ebert all locked away on long term deals.

Hopefully this can contribute to some sustained success.

Agreed @Booney, Normally apprehensive with long deals for players with a history of injury, but I am confident we have made the right decision with Hammer. Glad to see his faith in the club rewarded- hopefully he can reward the fans (and himself) with a premiership.

would have thought he would have traded off money for security

would have gone to the club and said I dont want these big money offers, but I want the security that I am playing my career out here, and it seems the club has looked after him. Good news for the power
