Yeah exactly scotroo, that's where people get all confused and funny.

And also where I would suggest rumours of massive player payments start.

You estimated they'd have 21 paid players:

morell wrote:3x star players on $300/game - $16k
8x good-uns on $200/game - $28k
10x role players on $50/game - $9k

It just would not happen at this level.

Which was a complete hypothetical and I wouldn't think would be out of the question for a club at this level. Maybe a few less good-uns and few more role players perhaps.

Whether that includes payments "for a win" or not too, which I know happens.

It's way out of the question at this level because it's totally unnecessary.

I believe it was a $20k sign on.
I also have a few figures being thrown around of what players were getting a couple on $800 a game with another 4 on $300

Perhaps. I agree. But the drive for success does funny things.

Say you pay $50 to every player for a win and you lose two games for the year and win two finals - that's nigh on $20k not including your main player payments for marquee recruits, sign on payments, other awards and incentives - also not including coaches payments.

It adds up very quickly.

There would have been D5 clubs that have paid close to the figures oldman is stating (allowing for inflation) in the past and it'll happen again.

This is an interesting hypothetical as it plays into the concept of worth.

On the face of it, I would think that playing 21 footballers at any level in the C9AFL is not "worth" it let alone at Division 5 level.

However, worth is really only relative to the resources you have to expend. If you can expend that much and it doesn't put you in a perilous financial position then all power to you.

Paying footballers "for a win" is paying every player...

Can tell you for fact that a div 5 club pays everyone that plays A grade in each game.. If you weren't contracted you received $40 as a match payment for playing.. I would be shocked if more didnt either tbh

Why are people so defensive about the amount of money being thrown around? We all know that to be a serious contender in any league you have to spend $$$$ all the best half a dozen at every club are getting paid. It could be incentive based or a simple $$$ per game. I have been around a few clubs in different leagues not just the SAAFL and let's be honest if your not prepared to pay something for your best junior players once they become seniors another club will throw serious money at them.

Im not saying this is wrong but I am saying that spending $100k is fact don't bury your heads in the sand this is what it takes.
