Will be under 2k next year, many others like myself are ready to walk. In the group of 8 I go with regularly 6 have already decided they are out. Myself and one other are uncomitted as yet, waiting to see if Port win it. Between the 8 of us we spent approx $40k at the club on memberships, player sponsors etc

Once again I ask, what business looks to ensure its future by alienating and actively driving away its core customers?

At the GFC information night I asked a question along the lines of "why don't you consider admitting the Blows into the reserves competition initially, with the potential to elevate them to league ranks in the next year if it worked out"?

The Glenelg delegate's answer was all to succinct: "The Blows don't want that." Next question.

Clearly the delegates no longer see the club members and fans as its core customers *. Rather, they see the Blows, and by extension the Smears, as the clients which must be catered to. With this in mind, I think that the SANFL is satisfying its (perceived) core customers all too well.

* - I do not like the term, but I'll roll with it.

Calling football supporters customers is pure folly. The word customer does not invoke anywhere near enough passion to describe those who follow pretty much any sporting code, certainly the likes of the SANFL anyway.

It's inaccurate, mildly offensive and simply not what we, as football fans, are.

I think he was using it as an analogy.
Although, sport is a business these days and that's how the bean counters look at us as customers.

True, but the whine thread has a link to an article, a well written article, that also refers to us as "customers".

These are the average crowds for each team in Pure Ladder (tm) order. The first column is average crowd over all pure games (home and away). The second column is average crowds over all games including forced trials against other-league garbage.

Code: Select all
Eagles          2216    2379
West            2161    2158
South           2122    2033
Norwood         3263    3235
Central         2188    2106
Sturt           2918    2844
Glenelg         2650    2633
North           2105    2095

Only one club's attendances were consistently improved by considering the gate at trial games: The Eagles. The inclusion of rubbish teams has damaged attendances for 7 of the 8 clubs.

--------

Now these are the average home * crowds. First column is the average home crowd against the other 7 Pure teams, second column the average figure over two home trials against the Blows and third column the crowd at the single home trial against the Smears.

* - caveat: by "home" I really mean "first named".

Code: Select all
Eagles          1954    3472    2272
West            1942    1640    2195
South           1769    1406    1683
Norwood         3712    2434    2163
Central         2005    1651    2433
Sturt           2857    2928    2440
Glenelg         3359    2872    2723
North           2026    2196    1964

Average home crowd at games against the Slows was below average for 5 of the 8 clubs.
Home crowd against the PAPs was below average for 5 of the 8 clubs.

So much for the "rejuvenation of the league" that was forecast at certain information nights.
Clowns OUT. Smears OUT. RESIST THE OCCUPATION.

Couldn't agree more.

I had a social conversation with a senior PAFC employee at the end of last season about the AFL Reserves debacle. After I mentioned my drop in enthusiasm for the SANFL (and that of many of my friends) he referred to the "metrics" that indicated it was a success for the SANFL comp. After the 3rd or 4th mention of the "metrics" I realised the conversation wasn't worth pursuing.

This year the "metrics" show a 13% drop in "customer" patronage.

Rule#1 - The Customer is always right
Rule#2 - ...........

Unfortunately your right.

Our leagues customer is now not us, its bloke like yourself, who will most likely catch a few games on tv before settling in for the AFL broadcast and may go to the odd SANFL game if 48 stars align such as weather, players involved in game, ladder position, other games on in AFL and other comps etc etc.(no disrespect intended)

It was so obvious from the reports back at the special meetings that were called that there was a much larger agenda going on and that no matter what the SANFL was going to be screwed over.

I will always say, in no shape or form do i ever think the SANFL will return to its glory days. My dream for the SANFL was that it would be an alternative to the manufactured, manipulated, franchise, plastic, corporate world of the AFL.

I could almost handle these crowds if there was passion and atmosphere at each ground, instead it feels like the 2400 people who are going each week are going out of unwavering loyalty, habit and the shear fact they cant let their team go.

There are still a few hanging on but the passion is gone!!

imho the SANFL will gone in less than 10 years.

Agreed Hammers.
It's certainly not a product that our kids are going to take to in its current form. Us 35+ crowd will be the last generation.
There will be no consolation, and the AFL mob will just screw their brows in confusion and ask where else their reserves were going to play. They really have no idea of the world outside their own coffee cups. They seem to be unable to comprehend the loss of integrity equates to loss of passion.
I'd laugh to see them all shit their pants if anything threatened the AFL. Funny thing is 80 % of them, after a time would just embrace the new product, whatever that is, and would eventually hang shit on the die hards for getting in the way of the new order in sport.
I guarantee it.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Unfortunately its the way of the modern world.

People are addicted to the big shiny lights!!

If 5AA, the advertiser, certain facebook pages and sponsers etc told us that the biggest event of the year was the 2016 Adelaide Pet Snail Marathon held at the brand new river torrens precinct it would attract a crowd of thousands of people taking selfies tagging themselves there etc.

People just want to be part of 'that big event' regardless of whether the product is any good. Its all about being seen to be cool.

Crowd as expected . 3 teams with a small supporter base and 1 not too bad but do come out when in the finals.

Would have been at least 4000 Dogs fans there, the woodwork has opened up considering how poor the crowds at Elizabeth have been noted as being through the year.

If it's an Eagles v West GF there might be under 20,000 there.

Yeah the banwagon definitely jumped on this week, was probably double the dogs supporters there compared to week one.

Already my phone is going off it's nut with people asking about next week and if 3 palms inn will be open etc etc, reckon the wagon will huge this week

Agree a Eagles, West GF is a disaster for the SANFL. I think your right with your under 20k especially because of what's gone on a lot of hardcore sanfl fans who would usually go will probably not attend

It's good to have a bandwagon. If you don't, your clubs are in big trouble.
Plus, plenty of free tickets going around for these finals - not too many for minor rounds.
