Okeefe wasnt terrible in the tests he played either, but i think Lyon still has that spot locked up for a while.

Im still not convinced Australia need an all rounder. We never had one in the glory days of a decade or so ago. Our bowlers also probably bat better than any other lineup in test cricket (though with the exception of Anderson the poms are pretty handy too).

We also have some fairly decent part timers. An all rounder seems like something you need if your attack isnt going well, and that is by far the least of our worries. Better to find the best 6 batsmen in the country and pick them, and worry about some part time stuff later.

OPENERS
Warner
Klinger/Bancroft/Khawaja
MIDDLE ORDER
Smith
Burns/Ferguson/Head/Handscomb/Stoinis/Khawaja
KEEPER
Nevill
FRONTLINE
Johnson/Starc/Bird/Cummins/Hazelwood/Fekete
SPINNER
Sandhu/Agar/Lyon/Ahmed

We have the options although we lack a genuine allrounder, the way I see it, if you don't have one with world class abilities, don't play one.

Sandhu isnt a spinner, though he did bowl some in India

My bad, for some reason his name made me think of spin.

Just looking through the Shield scores from last year, Bankcroft's stats are pretty good for an opener:

1st innings of game 61,132,15,55
2nd 129,99,29,34,18,13,211
3rd 8,DNB,17,38
4th 1,2,0,21,DNB,13,DNB

896 runs in 11 games, ave 47, got a start in every first innings
Don't know what to make of discrepancy between the innings - 1st innings 72 (58.5 without the 211 when they were batting time), 2nd innings 12.5.
450 in 5 first innings before the 20/20 break.
Strike Rate around 40.

Then 2,51,150,21* against India A

Is a strike rate of 40 in Shield too slow to convert to a test, or will it improve over time? Or is a perfect foil for Warner?

What other openers are there at the moment? Could this finally be the tie for klinger?

Maddison is an opener too?

Mitch Marsh may snub IPL to play country cricket in the UK.

FFS they have appointed Warner VC, the bloke is more than a few roos short in the top paddock, will never be an Australian Captain so why make him VC?

Options are a bit short ATM, not a lot of leadership quality in the current side

Really not sure who else it could be. The only other batsman who actually had a secured place in the side!

He does seem pretty thick though.

good points.

God i hope Steve Smith doesnt have an extended bad run. Would have to bring in Bailey to Captain the side ;)
Mitch Johnson would be the only other choice i guess

Talk that Mitch is hanging up the boots at the end of the Australian summer so id suppose they want someone who will be around for a bit. Lyon is probably the next best but there is always speculation that he is only one bad series away from being cut. Bring back Watto ;)

Yeah you still get the feeling Lyon isn't an automatic choice, even though I like him and I think he is the best choice still

Just on Bailey too - is he an option for the test side? Not really sure of his recent form but he can't be worse than Shaun marsh. And would provide a bit of experience

Almost time to go for the Steve Waugh type selection with one or two young batsman. Pick a couple you think will make it and just back them in for a couple years. Head might be one, must be some young prodigy in NSW

Yep, series against the Bangas away before hosting NZ and the Windies.
Get a couple of young bats in and give them a decent crack.
Bancroft to open and then Head/Doran to bat in the middle. Burns deserves a crack also

fair point about the teams we have to come - perfect time to blood some youngsters rather than going back to a Bailey or a S Marsh
