Rnd 5 - Sturt v North @ P.Motely Oval (Sat 2/5)

Postby Big Phil » Wed Apr 29, 2015 9:01 am

The Double Blues had a stirring victory against an improved West Adelaide outfit while the Roosters were again disappointing, going down to the Panthers at Prospect and failed to register a score in the final term...

This should be a fascinating conntest between two sides that have had some close recent encounters...

Saturday, May 2nd @ Peter Motely Oval, Unley

North could be in strife with injuries to Thring (definitely out) and Shannon possibly?

Although Sturt have some long term injuries themselves.....

North's injury list :

MITCHELL,Luke-Back-Indefinite
BURTON, Ryan-Leg-Indefinite
THIELE, Cohen-Knee-Indefinite
BARNS, Alex-Cheekbone-10-12 weeks
JOHNSTON, Lewis-Ankle-6 weeks
THRING, George-Ankle-2-3 weeks
GROVE, Corey-Foot-1-3 weeks
BOLES, Patrick-Groin-1-2 weeks
KUPSCH, Adam-Ankle-1-2 weeks
TEASDALE, Luke-Hamstring-Test
WILKIE, Callum-Knee-Test
THRING, Max-Hamstring-TBA
SHANNON, Jay-Ankle-TBA
ROBINSON, Lachie-Ankle-TBA

+ last week Kulikowski with the flu and O'Brien, injured missed as well.

Including those last two, at least 10 first choice players missing at the moment. North have been competing well but their lack of skill has been alarming. I guess that is because so many players who would normally be playing reserves are playing league. They are having a go but making too many mistakes and wrong decisions.

Unless we get some players back it will be a long, long year.

Im not overly familiar with whats going on at Prospect RIG, but would I would be right in saying 5 of those have been/are league regular players? (Thring x2, Johnston, Thiele, Shannon)

Kulikowski and O'Brien would both definitely be first pick players, one of Mitchell or Barns would certainly be in our best side. They both played well on Anzac Day last year as did young Burton who as a 17 year old looked an absolute gun before breaking his leg in a school match fairly early last year. He was touted last year as being at least a top 10 draft pick, if not higher at the AFL draft at the end of this year. He was too young for last year's draft.

I would also expect one of Teasdale or Boles to make our best 21, but not necessarily both. They are similar players. The same with Mitchell and Barns. They are both key forwards and in our best side with Johnston and Shillabeer would be vying for the third key tall. At the moment either would be more than handy, if fit.

The other mystery one is Groves. I can't recall him playing but some Port friends rate him highly as a key position player. He was being groomed for Centre Half Back/Full Back although I think that he was a key forward at Port.

As I said before at least 10 of that list would be in North's best 21.

Fair to say you wouldnt expect any club to cope well with half their best lineup missing. You guys just need to try and eek out enough wins so that when you improve your lineup you are still well in the hunt for finals

Agree that North are missing a few, Caldwell out for a week suspended too.

For Sturt:
Crocker
Evans
Krause
Watt
Bartlett
Duldig
Staple

Probably all play for Sturt. Difference is Sturt have greater depth at the moment and can cover them better.

Probably more 'top 10ers' on North's injured list.

Yep. And our gameplan isn't working either
Sturt to dismantle a weakened North by 4 or 5 goals

Someone somewhere posted they thought this was a reasonable crowd.

If @spell_checkcould be bothered would there be any way of listing the Sturt North at Unley crowds for the last five or ten years?

Just over 3K seems low to me.

Unley Oval looking a lot better with the picket fence now circling the oval. Point of interest too with a number of the pickets now with small "naming' plaques on them. A number of ex players, a lot of familiar family names too. Captures some of the heritage of the club. Plenty of gates too for the residents who think a small fence was too big a concession to make.

So certainly not a good number if you compare it to the early-mid 2000s, but the highest Sturt North crowd at Unley since 2008 is certainly not bad!

The atmosphere at some of those 4k crowds was always good. I'm a bit surprised at the 3k mark Saturday I thought it was around 2500 in the end it's a pretty good crowd all things considered
