LSIC is an automatic payment that doesn't require voluntary contributions.

I've long suspected that all the present compulsory superannuation system at 9% (or even at 12%) would do is is ensure more people don't qualify for the full pension and therefore don't get most of the concessions. So, the people at the lower end may actually finish up worse off if they have a minimal superannuation. Yet it is unrealistic to expect employers to stump up an even higher percentage or for low earners to put in enough of their own earnings.

It may make more sense to encourage the middle to moderately high income earners to put enough away to not qualify for even a part pension, and leave that money available for those who need pensions. To make that work the tax levels shown on the scale Q posted would have to start to kick in a little higher than they do on that scale, and then rise more steeply for the very high earners.

The other thing from my point of view is that I wouldn't trust a government, union, or departmental bureaucracy, to run a fund with my money in it as they may allow the government, state or federal, to "borrow" it on a promise to put it back "when needed".

That's what Don Dunstan said the state ALP would do when they "borrowed" from the state superannuation fund under his, and his successors, care, but when it was needed the Bannon government didn't have the funds to put it back. That's what drove the subsequent privatisations - not the cash for selling the utilities but the buyers taking over the unfunded superannuation liability.

(Before I started to do occasional medical locum work my accountant advised me that the earnings from my super and bank interest were low enough to entitle me to a part pension, but I didn't apply for it.)

The government is starting to leak like a sieve with damaging backgrounding discrediting Abbott ... a carcass swinging in the breeze now and only a matter of time before he's gone.

Can't see him lasting the year.

So you're happy for a Labour government to be held accountable, but willing to look the other direction for a Coalition government. Says a lot.

Possibly the stupidest argument I have ever heard in my life. Most of us would rather that no politician lied.

Looks like some issues a foot with our new fighter jets. Not big ones just hellish engine issues, software issues, the fact that there is going to be a budget blowout and also the fact that based on the design and technology they are likely to be easily detected. But hey it will all be good because we are getting value for money from these Chinese jets.

But that ot must be the previous administrations fault. Good thing they weren't built by aussie owned company because all Australian stuff is crap and we probably couldn't build a kite.
