whufc wrote:In fairness to Watson a batting average of 36 and bowling average of 32 probably means his had a reasonable test career

IMHO though he should be batting at 6 or 7 though depending on who the keeper is.

I think his bowling his very underrated

If he can't bowl though he doesn't warrant his spot in the side

He should be fighting for one spot with Mitch Marsh

For me in test cricket

Watson better bowler than Marsh
Marsh better batsmen than Watto

Acceptable career as the allrounder
Plugs a few gaps , paid his way as the allrounder
BUT
He is not the Test cricket match winner that he is in shorter forms of cricket where he is a star

Today was vintage Watto , did the hard work, looked the goods and got out after another Test innings start

He is extremely fortunate that Marsh got injured
It means he will bowl more this series perhaps
He needs a 3-5 wicket haul or a batting score close to 99
Otherwise MT79 and a bevy of safooty Watto critcs will gain in momentum

More unspectacular performances may even get Rod Rooster posting !

Yes, is originally from South Africa

His dad got a job here when he was 10. Within 12 months he was playing in the Queensland underage teams.

Looks in mint touch at the moment (will probably get out now)

I think most people see the technique and talent the selectors see in him but it's between the ears and his fitness that will decide if he makes it as a test batsmen

The selectors have a good record of making it work when they give blokes 2-3-4 chances

I wanna back him

It would be a $1.01 with his history hey

Serious question if he hits a 100 in the first a 0 in the second and averages 50 throughout his career does he hold his spot

In fairness to Marsh he averages

32 @ test level
39 @ odi level

That suggests he some base to work from at international level and his not completely out of his depth

Anyone who has listened to the 5AA call of the cricket would agree, I'l take Brayshaw over Greg Matthews any day of the week. In no way am i saying im a fan of Brayshaw.
Im surprised he can stay off the piss long enough to commentate a days cricket. I flick over to the ABC now even if it is Drew Morphett boring the shit out of me

You don't think its because his put away the short ball.

I can't honestly say that. I've seen him bowl a number of ripper short balls. However, I'd like to see what the % of short balls he has bowled has been, as compared to this time last summer.

Here's another for ya? When was the last Australian bowler to take a 5 for in their debut test match??

In modern times...

Simon Cook - 5/39 v NZ in 1997
Brett Lee - 5/47 v India in 1999
Stuart Clark - 5/55 v South Africa in 2006
Jason Krejza - 8/215 v India in 2008
Nathan Lyon - 5/34 v Sri Lanka in 2011
Pat Cummins - 6/79 v South Africa in 2011
James Pattinson - 5/27 v New Zealand in 2011

Who is Simon Cook?

From NSW, if I remember correctly. Fast bowler. Played five Tests at most, I reckon.
