its amazing that the biggest sport in the country doesn't have its own reserves comp

Not at all amazing, the NFL doesn't have any reserves competition at all and I'm sure the AFL is looking at that as a possible model to follow in the future.

NFL doesn't have any grassroots level competition either though, it's either the big time or nothing.

they have kids comps.
primary, high school and college....

NFL players are the professional of the professional. You can also have 53 players available on any given Sunday and activate them as you wish. They train like they play. No need for a reserves comp.[/quote]

Was about to ask, what happens to the not required players on the match day squad? Maybe its the AFL teams that have got it wrong.....

I think the decision to have AFL reserves comp could be pushed along by the AFL players association.

In the last few years we have seen the AFLPA get their requests for Free Agency and an Extra Bye during the season. I think they now realise that without them the AFL has nothing so if the AFLPA want a reserves comp it will happen.

Could the SANFL dissolve as we know it and become a "Premier League"?

The strong clubs allowed to stick around, the rest off to SAAFL or defunct, and top the comp up with a side from NT and perhaps VIC country?

An AFL Reserves comp, if we were seriously looking at it as an option in the near future, what sort of time frame would we be looking? Surely would have to wait until the Suns and GWS are firmly founded so the resources can be adequately applied to the successful implementation of such a comp?

now theres an idea the SANPL - south Australian national premier league

I like it

Crows & Port Power reserves to start throwing games shortly because SANFL becomes worried about pissed off supporters from the other clubs and danger of dwindling crowds.

What's worse, them smashing everyone because of their extra resources or them f.cking around for development purposes and not trying ?

Either way the integrity of the comp is down the sh.tter !

Ruin the integrity of any comp and people lose interest very quickly.

A combination of both, which is likely to happen as the season progresses.

If they somehow talk there way out the agreement and also keep there current list for 2015, i'm out of here. This is a disgrace, the league has already shown it's a pushover and will do anything to please the afl clubs, FFS.

It would be an interesting exercise to work out the weekly salary of the magpies and ravens each week to determine their cost for the season in the SANFL. The clubs then could look at increasing salary cap if in excess of it. Has this been discussed or considered?

The Port and Crows teams last week would be on 10 times more coin than Centrals and Eagles sides.
Taylor Walker will earn more this week than the whole Glenelg side

It is too early to tell what effect all this will have on the future of the SANFL. There is sure to be some good and bad points.

What is bad is if the AFL Reserves sides are thrashing the SANFL sides.

So far Port have had 6 top up players in all 3 games. Adelaide had 6 against North, 3 against Sturt and 4 against Central.

You can't control how strong an AFL list is. The likes of Stewart and Moore are probably a cut above the best the Crows have in the Reserves and probably better than the best that SANFL clubs have to offer.

However, they can control how strong the top up list is and they should do something about it after 9 games (half way point of season). If not, at the end of the season top up players should be restricted by age. All should be Under 20.

I don't care if the Magpies keep their under-age sides/reserves sides. As long as there are no players over the age of 21 that aren't on an AFL list in their SANFL league side.

It has been mentioned that the strength of the AFL Reserves sides will be tested with some injuries - but this is relevant to the SANFL sides too with the lack of depth in SANFL Reserves footy, largely due to an expansion of teams in the AFL and dollars/lifestyle on offer in the country/ammos.

Why are we all talking about how strong the MAGPIES and crows are? Before the start of the season all the talk was about how we didn't want to win.
We're on this journey together, One Heart, One Club and they will Never Ever Tear Us Apart.
