A lengthy list indeed for the Sainters. Some are saying it is the Doom, others plain bad luck but lets have a look at some of those injured players. Indeed some can be put down to plain ol bad luck. Players in this category would be Maguire, Montagna, Goddard, Ferguson, Gram and Jones. Yep, six of em! That is unlucky.
However a part of this lengthy injury list I believe is down to relying on ageing players and players with a known history of injury problems. The majority of the football world knows that Aaron Hamill is a lemon, yet he was retained on the St Kilda list. Harvey is the oldest player in the league but Banger is not used like Peter Riccardi was towards the end..Harvs is still expected to run all day and the resultant soft tissue injury was probably inevitable. The Clarke brothers also break down more often than Bruce Reid, they have an ongoing history of it..no surprise then that both are currently on the injured list. Then there is a list of ageing players on this list such as Hudgton, Thompson and Gardiner who are also on the injured.
Many of the injuries suffered by the St Kilda football club are as a result of poor list management. For example, the Saints traded away draft picks to get players such as Guerra and Ackland, who they have since moved on. This places additional reliance on players whose bodies aren't up to the rigours of AFL football. Every club has bad luck with injuries from time to time but luck is only a part of the reason why the Saints find themselves so undermanned today.
