Also awesome to see the WI minors and Flinders minors go at it last night, in an extremely fast, scary-ily skillful, and extremely well spirited match. WI had Jamie Conlon playing, as well as the oldest looking 18 year old of ever seen (Jon Floreani) helping out, yet Flinders were too good on the night, and some of their players (whom i assume were playing their first game) were electric. They werent too interested in taking their points, but were very keen on hitting the sack!

Opinions vary but i have been told if you hit the sack its a red card

Might have to make sure the sideline is well and truly visible this week, I think the linesman had trouble working out where he was supposed to be last week...

I've heard that WI beat the Taints tonight, not sure how much by...

Port beat Mitcham by about 18, I think it was 7.7 to 1.7 (I could be slightly off)

Was a very scrappy first half, and the scores were 2.3 (Port) to 0.5 (Mitcham) at half time. Port were pretty wasteful in the first half messing up a few chances very close to goal. Mitcham held pretty well with a few players running the ball quite well; numbers 3, 5 and 8 spring to mind.
Mitcham seem to have picked up a few players from the U18 State side, and if they can get the 13-15 players every week should improve the more they play together (which goes without saying I guess).
Mitcham switched goalkeepers at the break for some reason (I thought strange as their original goalie was doing quite well). The second keeper did ok as far as saves went, but couldn't kick over a jam tin, and Mitcham massively struggled to clear the ball out of their half.
Toasty was quite good for Port kicking 4 (I think) of their unders. Definite room for improvement for Port, and will be an interesting game against Saint Brendan's this week.

Just a side note, there were a few issues with the calling of the lines...most of the time the head ref ended up calling a 'ball up'... other than that I thought the ref did a good job.

The Ref was excellent tonight despite the pressure of being assessed. Just to continue the learning curve, in Gaelic its called a hop ball and not a ball up. We can probably let you get away with that one though.
We are never going to have expert or paid or professional lines persons or goal umps so it will be an indefinite problem. The ref did have them all in the correct position and correctly attired however which is more than i can say for most games.
To the Port Districts Gaelic footy club i want to say well done on a good first up win and your rendition of your club song was stirring, loud and sung with tremndious gusto.

TONIGHT RESULTS
WEST IRELAND 2.6-12 DEF ST.BRENDANS 1.7-10
W.I BEST ; Jack Whoran (not sure on the spelling), JFlo, Kiwi and Liam in goals
ST.B ; Backy, Zues and Dunks
Interesting to see a former AFL player, a current AFL player and a host of ex SANFL players in this game. It was a fast and furious game played with superb intensity. Great to be a part of a game like that.

PORT 7.7-28 DEF MITCHAM 2.6-12
BEST PORT ; Jack Mahney, "Rocket" Rod Smitheram (guest star of WOWFMs Saturday Gameday) and Toasty
MITCHAM ; Carey, Soxy and Mase
Huge relief to see 20 plus guys kit up for Mitcham. One step at a time but maybe next week locating your other 10 guernseys so im not seeing more bossom than Hugh Heffner would be good.

Not the first AFL listed player to do it. Others that spring to mind are Hueskes, Cooney, Griffin, Ladhams and with a little bit of luck the next one will be #@% *&%#@^& assuming he does get drafted this year. There have also been many ex-AFL and future AFL listed players make cameo appearances along the journey.
Not going to say any names but my mail is that it was just a once off at this stage by the player last night. I reffed the game and didnt recognise him so pretty sure most may have missed it. It would be good if he could continue to play.
The Pav has also been seen at Gaelic Park St.Marys a couple of times due to his links with the Flo family. The first time the Goats were scheduled to play Na Fianna. Im not sure if it was the threat of the "human glove" Bruno Roccas tagging role or the aprox three quarters of a million dollar contract but he chose just to spectate

Good for Mitcham to get it together this week, after a horrible start let's hope that they can get consistant numbers out on the park.
#@% *&%#@^& quality name, is it Russian???
Looking forward to seeing the Sex Panther unleashed tomorrow as well!

the whole game in ireland is amateur, which means no player is paid for playing

there are county and club comps, not sure how the club system works

most teams have footy and hurling, with some good at both while some only really good at one

for footy, the season start with the league which i think has 4 divisions with teams playing each other once in an 8 team league and finals with promotion and relegation, i think this affect seeding for the county/all ireland championships, which i what its all about, the league is a pre courser to this

the county championships is team from the 4 respective counties battle it out to win the county championship, hence have an easier draw in the all ireland championship by entering at the quater finals stage

counties also have a minors and u/21 teams and a few teams here in sa have been graced by past county u/21 players, anthony dolan, who played for flinders last season, played for kerry at this level and his class was evident, was easily one of the best in the comp

thats a rough run down, not sure about the specifics of how teams technically qualify for the all ireland and how the qualifiers work

in other states former senior gaa players are playing in the comps as they have come here seeking work, and this draws the ire of a few at nationals time as the eastern states get these visa players to play for them

the sevens ladder is wrong also as flinders only conceeded 9 points for the old bhoys

actually the scores are the wrong way around for the flinders teams

Correct. I assume the web master will see these posts and make the necessary adjustments otherwise i will get it fixed next Wednesday.
Will be an interesting week for the undefeated club (in mens and 7s) facing Onkas in both comps whilst your minors face a very promising looking Christies Beach. Im very much looking forward to reffing the Minors and seeing what all the hype is about 8)
